Oil additives, for example STP, were used when there was non-detergent oils. They were usually cleaning additives that caused more sludge than good. But, they have good retail markup, as many are still sold today.

I thought he meant "oil additives" such as Slick 50 and Z-Max.

If he needs slick 50 or Zmax on a car with 30K on it, then he really does have problems, or he is driving the living daylights out of it. Bottom line, these additives really are not worth the risk/hassle in a newer car like yours. Stick them in the old beater that's on it's last legs anyway.
The only thing that touches my oil crankcase is a bottle of AutoRX. I used it and when it was time for an oil change, I cut open my oil filter and there were sludge buildup everywhere.
A buddy of mine has leak on his 93 Honda accord. He has about 170k miles on it and every 3k miles, he would lose a quart of oil. He ran AutoRX as suggested by me and right after 1.5k mile, he had to do the rinsing stage. One he was at that stage, no more oil leaks. I've seen engines opened up after the AutoRX treatment and its very clean. a 130k engine will look like it only has 10k miles on it (plus minus a few k mile )

I have to second the praises on Auto RX. I have used it on my 2KGS4 and 99 Subaru Forester and got exactly what I'm looking for. A smooth running/clean engine on the GS and no leaks on the Subaru.
