Unhappy Too much oil?

How much oil is needed for an RX300 oil change. I just found out that 5.5 quarts was put into mine. Is that too much?

What are the consequences?

Thanks.

The RX300 takes five quarts with a filter change. Too much oil can cause the crankshaft to dip into the oil causing a drag on the crank and frothing of the oil (this will introduce air bubbles into the oil and is detrimental to the correct flow of oil). There are also issues of too much oil pressure - the oil has to go somewhere. This could lead to oil leaking or burning in the cylinders.

Not to scare you, but these are things that can happen. I don't think half a quart is that detrimental but to be safe you can always drain the oil and refill. Since the filter is new, refill with four quarts leaving the filter on. When changing oil, I always refill with oil minus half a quart. I then crank the vehicle, check the level, and finish filling as necessary.

Wink

Thanks LexRX.

I drove it back to the service center and had them re-checked. They advised that it's it's alright to have extra 1/2 quart in the engine. Anyway, I instructed them to drain it just in case. So, the level is back to normal now.

Thanks very much.

Regards,
Patrick
