Default Another Tires thread

I have 2017 LX570 with 22k miles and the car vibrates at highway speeds, dealer says needs new tires, I have the 21" Dunlop, according to what I read, it seems these tires are not very good. I need to replace all the tires.

I checked with discount tires, the selection is as follows:

Yokohama, GEOLANDAR H/T G056, 275 /50 R21 113V XL BSW, $281,
MICHELIN,PILOT SPORT 4 SUV,275 /50 R21 113V XL BSW $440
NOKIAN TIRE,HAKKAPELIITTA R3 SUV275 /50 R21 113R XL BSW, $396
TOYO TIRE,OPEN COUNTRY H/T II,275 /50 R21 113V XL BSW, $238

Michelin is a summer tire 20,000 miles warranty, Yokohama is All Terrain 70,000 miles warranty, the other two seems to be all terrain and 70,000 miles warranty.

Always preferred Michelin and bought them, but this time I am inclined to go with Yokohama, seems to be the reasonable choice.

I appreciate members input very much,

Last year I bought the toyo tires from simple tire since they had a discount to it. Good warranty similar to Yokohama. Rides great so far. No complaints. $941 total for all 4 tires.

Are the tires quite or more noise than the Dunlop?

We have Toyo ATII's on our Land Cruiser and LX, as well as a 3/4 Dodge pickup. Good wear, good on street as well as dirt, and no problems.

I would not have Dunlop's but the Toyo's are quiet at 80+ mph on the highway. We also don't have them on 21" wheels...where we go ride quality and tire wear demand 18" wheels.

First off, we are sorry to hear the troubles you are having with your current tires and the vibrations. Secondly, thank you for stopping by our site for information, as well the opportunity to earn your business. We wanted to add a few bits of information in an effort to help.

Tires are a product of compromise, meaning no tire can score 5 out of 5 in every performance attribute, there will always be a give and take. Considering your specific usage of the vehicle as well as the local climate and weather can help narrow down the selection, also your driving habits and what you value most in a tire such as ride comfort or longevity can help find the right tire that caters to your needs.

Both the Yokohama G056 and the Toyo Open county fall into the All Season category, being in Nevada if this is a vehicle you intend to drive all year long and use the same tires, this category would be a great choice as the compounds are designed to stay pliable when the temperatures are below 45 degrees.

As you stated the Michelin 4 SUV is a summer tire, so if this vehicle does not get driven in the winter temperatures (below 45 degrees) or if you have a dedicated winter tire and wheel package that you would installed when the temps drop, this category would be a great choice as this Michelin would deliver fantastic wet and dry traction as well as comfort.

The Nokian Hakkapeliitta R3 is a dedicated winter tire and if you were looking for a tire that could safely get you anywhere in the winter, this would be a great choice, however you would not want to drive on this if the temperatures were above 45 degrees as the tire would be far to soft and wear away quickly.

Ok, I decided to go with the Toyo tires, consumer report rates them higher than the Yokohama, just ordered them online at Discount Tire, I will update on how the tires ride once I have them.

Good thread - I'm also ready to check out the Toyo's once my Dunlops are close to replacing as they are $400 each which is insane....

I hope that you both report back after you've replaced and put some miles on the tires. I am about 8-10 months away from replacing and am in the same boat.

Did they put the tires on a road force balancer and verify that one / some of them are out of round? Or they are just guessing that the vibration is caused by those tires? High speed vibration is usually caused by something that is rotating..hence axles, drive shafts, even diff / tranny / transfer case will cause vibration. Just make sure they are not changing things just to 'test'l

Sure, I put it on neutral at 75 mph and still the vibration was there, shouldn't that negates mechanical issue?

Vibration is only between 70mph till 80mph and it is gone after that that. In addition two seperate Lexus dealerships say it is a tire issue and discount tire and carmax balanced the tires within two weeks and both failed.

Actually putting it in neutral at certain mph only isolate if the vibration could be caused by the differential / transmission (under load / not). If under load, then likely will be on the diff side. If in neutral (diff not under load), should point more towards forward (tranny / drive shaft etc).

If tires are not balanced right, vibration should be 'heavier / more extreme' as speed increases (the frequency (vibration) should increase as speed goes up - think of it as a sine wave). If tires are out of round, similar vibration should occur as speed increases. Both should not go away as speed increases (under normal speed - I am not sure if, just for the sake of argument - if you are going at speed of light will that vibration be minimized since the frequency gets so high LOL) . 'Tires out of round' can be detected by putting each tire on a 'road force balancer' which many dealers don't have. 'Tires out of balance' will just need to rebalance on the tire machine. Hence I am leaning more towards mechanical fault rather than tires.

I am sure I was going below speed of light, but seriously assuming it is not a tire/wheel issue, so basically you are saying that at speeds between 70 mph and 80 mph, the Tranny/drive shaft goes into resonance and thus vibrates, once above or below the speed range it disappears.

Lexus dealer inspected the car and mentioned excessive ware at the inside of front tires tread is at 3/32, they said that both front tires need to be replaced and alignment is also required and mentioned that tread is 5/32" for rear tires. Carmax (where I bought the car) disagrees and says tires are at 6/32" front and rear.

I have balanced the tires twice at discount tires and Carmax, do you think Discount tire does not have road force balancer?

I have appointment with discount tire next week to replace 4 tires, and we will see what happens then.

Out of round tires can still be balanced.... that's why you'll need a road force balancer to check if the tire is a perfect circle which I doubt Discount Tire has. I know some Toyota Dealership has road force balancer (you'll have to call around)...How about if there's a local school (that offers automotive classes)??? They should have a road force balancer (at least the school close to where I am they have the newest machine to test such).

Keep us posted how it goes buddy.

The LX is my wife's vehicle and it sees nothing but local mall parking lots and occasional highway trips to other shopping malls. The 21" Yokohama's have held up great. The tread life is much better than stock, although I obviously can't comment on their off-road capability.
