Default 89 vs 93 octane

Under the current LGB gas price debacle I unfortunately had to gas up my baby for the first time in two+ months. I only drive her on Friday and some weekend days. Today I noticed a really crazy variable in the price of the three normal "flavors" of gas. I've been around the block or two.. or three... decades and traditionally the price difference between 87 and 93 was on or about 20 cents and it didn't matter what the base price was. Today when I was filling up my LS the difference between 87 and 93 was almost a dollar. The price of a barrel of oil is the base of any gallon of gas.

To me this is price gouging as the price per barrel has fallen from 130 to 105 in the last few days. Having said that... I used to avoid octane boosters because of the minuscule octane price differences in the last 30+ years. Now I'm considering those boosters as an investment and an offset of the now epic differences in the cost of regular vs premium.

I'm leaning towards a royal purple additive but do any of you have any favorites?

Thank you,
Jeffrey

I do not have any favorite additives since mine doesn't have a tune or a turbo

These are nearly the same motors shoved in Land Cruisers and Tundras which take 87 all day.

Not that I put 87 in mine, though I wouldn't hesitate to fill up with such if that was the only option.

Good luck with that. When the knock sensor senses engine knock (pinging), it backs off the timing to compensate for the lower octane. This lowers gas mileage.

Just an FYI, not to make this political, like you did, but gas prices and politicians are not connected. The same way the price of your breakfast cereal or milk or coffee or literally everything else in a free-market, isn't controlled by a politician. If a politician could pull a lever and reduce gas prices, they would, I guarantee it. To learn more about why gas is expensive now try reading this, (spoiler, a nuclear power has invaded a sovereign nation and WW3 is on the brink of breaking out): https://www.thebalance.com/why-are-g...o-high-3305653 and https://news.northwestern.edu/storie...s-prices/&fj=1

Not sure how long its been since you pumped premium but its hasn't been 30 cents more than regular for years. 40-50 cents is the norm. Shell 93 has been 50 cents or more for a long time.

As for why current premium prices are higher its because there's a shortage of chemicals that make up the additive packages, not oil. If you go to your local wally world and go down the automotive chemicals aisle you'll see many things out of stock because the chemicals are unavailable.

Now, to your actual question - use 87 and don't floor it. Or, if you drive it only twice a week, bite the bullet and pay $15-$20 more a tank. You bought a flagship luxury car, premium is the cost to play the game.

True, but it's marginal, as it the performance hit.

You're right about reduced gas mileage. But he said there was no damages or repairs needed. Point is, no damage.

Nearly the same other than 2 more points of compression and the 3UR is also known for KCLV issues.....

Not a dollar more. In the northeast (NY, NJ) the difference btw 87 and 91 has generally been 30 to 40 cents.

not trying to be rude, but people like you, with your mindset are the problem

the politicians, do not work for you, they work for their bosses which are the globalist entities, WEF, banks, corporations , big pharma etc... abd yes the OIL companies. Cant u see quality of life getting worse year by year?

after 3 years of tyranny, lockdowns forced injections, forced masks and all sorts of human rights violations,,,u think its co incidence the gas prices are now doubling ? wake up man
