Hello everyone,
Bit of an odd situation here, I have a friends 07 ls460 in my driveway he brought over complaining about an oil leak. Its a big leak and I cant figure out where its coming from. It appears that some oil has hit the belt and been slung around everywhere underneath. The oil that is leaking out is clean ( not missed from filling oil) I found these parts when i pulled the shields off. There was oil pooling in the shields. I was wondering what these parts are/could be? The one is metal and looks like something sevre has happened to it. The black part is pretty thick plastic. Any ideas what is leaking? No check engine lights, engine runs fine but is spewing oil. My next step is to go get a dye and see if i can figure out where its coming from but would still like to know what the parts are that were laying on the shield. Metal part to the right. Metal piece in front. Looks like a cast piece.
I have been thinking on this one. I cant remember seeing anything that looked like that in the engine compartment. The round cover piece I haven't seen, I don't think any of the plastic is textured like the small bits, and I don't recall any white plastic. Admittedly I haven't rebuilt one of these, but I've been under it enough I'd think Id recognize something. I looked at some photos of engines online and didn't see anything that really matched. When I took my engine shield off, i had collected a ton of road debris, so maybe these bits are a coincidence?
The metal piece is disconcerting, but I cant think of where you'd blow out a chunk of metal that touches any oil, and not have a horrendous problem or at least a CEL. Maybe it just hasn't happened yet (probably don't want to force that one).
I'm Interested to see what this turns out to be. Gushing oil sounds terrifying . Hoping it's a valve cover gasket and not a chunk out of your upper oil pan!
Is there anyway to really see the upper oil pan? Also i think I have narrowed it down to something over y the Ac compressor. Put the dye in and let it run 5 min, i was by myself so it was a bit hard because by the time o got under there it was a bit of oil spread around. Im going to replace the 2 o-ring gaskets for the filter housing today and see if that was it. Is there anything else that would leak oil around that area? There was a slight bit of metal in the oil, but its hard telling if its recent or wear because motor has almost 185k miles. maybe timing guide wear?
Not entirely. Even then its not too easy. I didn't mean that as a suggestion, more of a "I hope its easy and not hard". It would have to be something big to crack that. Engine would be toast.
Above the oil filter you have the neck and its attached to the pump. There's also the sensor/sender.
Maybe he hit something big like @johnnyg66 said?
Sounding worse and worse though, unfortunately. Keep us posted.
Replaced the 2 o-rings behind the oil filter housing. Also noticed that it looked like the wrong oil filter in the housing ( He takes car to the quick change places) Once I got it put back together it appeared to not be leaking. It was getting dark and he needed the car so I crossed my fingers. Hopefully this works but if not ill start looking at other possible causes.
Byt where did those broken pieces come from? Also if you don't seat the filter housing all the way it will leak a ton of oil, I made this mistake on the GS which uses the same housing and filter when changing the oil in the dark one night.
If the oil filter housing is tightened too tight it will leak. BTDT. I replaced the POS plastic one with a metal one and it leaked at first. Replaced the o-ring and used my tq wrench at 22lbs'ft and no more leak.
