Default Large Oil Consumption...

So I purchased my 2008 LS460 on August 31st from Carmax the car had 111,250k

I paid a local Lexus dealer to do a pre-purchase inspection the following day and that took about 4 hours and they said the car was a-ok.

Just for curiosity sake I checked the oil at 111,650 and it was quite low so I topped it off.

Today I checked the oil, engine was cold, current mileage 112,600 and the oil indicator is well below the last circle on the dip stick

The oil level indicator has not come on and the car runs fine

There are no visible leaks on the ground

I do have a CNA warranty that will kick in at the end of this month so I was thinking about bringing it to a Lexus dealer then for this issue.

Does anyone have any other suggestions ? What is the main cause of such a large amount of oil usage in such a short amount of time ?

oil consumption on these big V8 Lexus motors has long been a reported thing

my 07 460 uses a quart of oil around 1300 miles of driving

Did you yourself topped the engine oil ?

Was the engine cold or hot at the time of topping

Which oil did you use ?

Any smell or smoke that you noticed ?

I topped it off, it was hot

I used 5w-20

No smoke or smells

So I just calculated, in 1068 miles the engine went through 2 quarts

I think it was because of hot engine next time do it when the engine is cold and do a full drain and refill

Its a good thing that there is no smoke or smell .. still 2 quarts is alot i am doin complete drain and refill with filter at every 6000-7000 miles i am doing highway 70% and city 30%

Ok, thank you, but how can putting two quarts of oil in a hot engine make it leak or evaporate faster vs. if I put it in when the engine is cold?

Its not the hot engine or cold that is making it disappear according to my understanding it was the previous oil that was in the engine that is why i told you to drain and refill it properly i am not sure about the value but the oil i am using here in dubai is two big bottles and one small usually if i go to any local garage they just fill with two bottles and dont care about the small bottle so i buy the oil myself and refill it properly .

You were not sure about the viscosity of the previous oil aswell .. and by cold engine i mean a 3-4minutes of engine time so the oil can get warm and easily drain

Here is something .
Synthetic oil has a higher rate of expansion and contraction with temperature changes. These blends will be much tighter when cold and could expand even more than expected when hot.

Regular oil will experience normal expansion and contraction, which means you will get around the same readings regardless of temperature.

I've had 2 LS460s and never had an issue with oil consumption - dino oil in the '07 and synthetic in the '14. Oil consumption shouldn't be an issue it these cars. If you have excessive oil consumption and there's no sign of a leak, then it is being burned. Having said that, if it's an older car then it's cheaper to just keep topping it off than to undertake major engine surgery.

You are now realizing the negative of posting on a Lexus forum where people can’t possibly imagine that you have a real problem. It may be unique, but it’s real. And most of the responses are basically saying, “there isn’t a problem, you are only imagining it.”

If you are going through that much oil there is a major problem.

First off he checked the oil on hot engine
Second hes not having any burning smell from engine bay
Third no smokes from exhaust
Fourth no missfire

How can you say hes having a major problem ?

My car is down below the first dot around 3500 miles after the oil has been changed. This is 90 percent highway and I'm a very spirited driver. I won't say it's normal but it is a common issue on this forum. The GS also started to burn oil so I pulled the manifold and spark plugs and soaked the pistons and valves with seafoam for 2 days. The low oil light has not come back on and I'm into the second oil change. I won't be satisfied it's fixed until 2 to 3 more oil changes though. That engine has 160k on it.

I bought my 2013 LS AWD last year and lately, I came across a paragraph in the owner's manual, which indicates that it is normal that my car WILL consume oil.

Can some of our members with knowledge on the engine and auto-mechanics tell us the difference between consuming oil and burning oil? I think, as owners of these fancy machines, we need to gain more understanding about the subtle difference!

I used to consume oil, largely coming from the fuel pump gaskets leaking. I put some easy DIY sealant around those and switched to 5w30 and no more leaks. That was 30k miles ago.

Default Oil consumption

I never would have connected the fuel pump gasket could affect oil consumption.
How did you test it or confirm it from the beginning?
