So, the oil consumption issue with my 2008 LS is getting worse, now going through 2qts every 850 miles. No smoke, smells, no leaks on ground. I do hear pops when I turn off the car, not sure if this is oil leaking somewhere in the engine around a seal, doubt it, but not sure.

Any ideas, again, why my car is drinking oil like water and there are no leaks anywhere on the ground ?

I'm at 1-2 quarts every fill up. Gives me something to do at the gas station while I put my 21 gallons in once or twice a week. The oil costs 2-4 dollars buying 12 packs in bulk and the gas is 70. Plus you get that warm and fuzzy feeling knowing you're keeping your car very well lubricated after your top off. Seeing some blue smoke when I start the car but just for a moment. Runs great and I floor it on the highway daily and it hauls ***. I do have about 30k more miles to go on an extended warranty that includes piston rings, which may be the cause, and I may look into making the claim as I get closer to its expiration. 256k miles on my 08.

That’s a lot of oil consumption too.

i have zero smoke when I start and drives great too.

I just have no idea what could be causing such a large oil consumption , 2 qts in 800 miles is not normal nor is your cars oil consumption

Can some of our members with knowledge on the engine and auto-mechanics tell us the difference between consuming oil and burning oil? I think, as owners of these fancy machines, we need to gain more understanding about the subtle difference!
Consuming oil and burning oil are the same things...bottom line, oil gets into the cylinder and it is burned, and the oil level drops at a rate that is not "normal". Now how that oil gets into the cylinders is a different story, because there are many different ways. You could have worn rings, stuck oil rings, excessively blowby causing the oil to go through the PCV valve system, worn valve guides, worn valve seals. Direct injection cars are also more prone to oil consumption...the fuel that is sprayed directly into the cylinders can mix with the oil on the cylinder wall, causing it to burn more than in a port injected engine. Low tension rings can also allow for oil consumption. A lot of this is tied into government mandated cooperate average fuel economy legislature...and the lengths manufacturers must go to achieve tough to reach fuel economy figures across their brand.

It is a clear sign that your oil is burning which is creating the blue smoke you see at start up worn piston rings or pcv valve can be the culprit

Ok as per you there is no leak and there is no smell of burning oil i just know one last thing and i hope it is not happening you can remove your plugs and see if there is any burned debris build up

A puff of oil smoke on cold start, or even warm-ish starts, points to valve guides/seals, at least initially.

At over a quarter of a million miles, wear is starting to show. Meh. A quarter-million miles.

When you can see smoke coming out while idling/on the throttle, you're burning much more than you'd think. A puff of smoke at start up, at high miles, isn't the end of the world, just keep an eye on it. Not all will do this at your miles, but then, I don't know how mine was treated, really, for its first 84K miles.

FWIW, my '07 LWB consumed about half a quart over 15K miles. Yes, 15K mile changes on Mobil 1, with oil testing. Don't know about this one, yet, but it should need an oil change in the next six months, probably. For now, consumption appears to be -0-.

My wife's '02 RX 300 consumed not a freakin' drop over 10K mile changes. Amazing.

I am gonna see about replacing the PCV valve it’s relatively cheap to do and might stop the large consumption.

ok guys i am new to this topic, i have read a few comments, seems like this oil consumption is a common problem and wondering if a collective effort has been made to get Lexus to fix it, my 07 LS460 has about 102k miles and the last oil change was maybe 2k miles ago, my wife drives it and kept telling me the oil message was coming on, and said says something about change oil, i thought the service tech might have forgotten to reset it or something so ignored it for a month (i dont drive it, its too low for me, i love my tall SUV), yesterday I decided to use her car as she needed gas and was not feeling well, and i noticed immediately 2 messages, oil change needed and oil level low, my hunny bunny mixed up the messages into just one and i was like, man i need to check the level, so while fueling up, checked and could not see much oil except all the way at the bottom of the stick... drove it home, this morning checked it, and the stick came out bone dry, i mean not even a lick at the bottom... i was stunned, how could that be? I heard Lexus were amazing vehicles, i have owned toyotas and never saw this, so the entire oil somehow got used up inside of 2k miles? I dont have any oil puddles, the car purrs like new, no hesitation, no smoke that i can tell.... what the heck is this? This is unacceptable for a brand like this and only at 102k which for new engines should be nothing... my 2012 Ford Expedition has 202k miles and runs perfectly without oil consumption...

Try filling it to full and monitor closely every few days and see what happens

@jdanielca How is your oil consumption since if I remember correctly you've had your whole engine overhauled recently ?

Hi dallas,
you are seeing the change oil light that is programmed to come on 5000 miles after the last change
it may or may not be 5000 miles since it was changed, but that is what is programmed in the software, and yes you can eliminate the message
secondly, yes these cars burn some oil, mine about a quart every 1300 miles or so yes we need to add oil every now and then, no big deal
personally I keep half a dozen quarts of 0-20 full synthetic in the garage and keep an eye on the oil dip stick
no reason to buy expensive oil to add, I go to Walmart or Autozone

How much is the oil difference between high and low marks on the dipstick?

How do you exactly measure oil consumption in between oil changes?

Edit: Answering my own question. Found answer in the manual. It is 1.6 qt

Like most higher mileage LS460, ours with 141k burns oil as well. After my last change (diy), my wife drove the car ~2500 miles and got the “low oil” warning message. Checked the dipstick and sure enough - the level was way low (didn’t touch the stick). Added 2 quarts and was back to middle of the range. At this point, it is what it is. The car was cheap enough where I don’t even care. The SuperTech from Wally world is cheap so if I have to go through a 5- quart jug between oil changes, so be it.

Yes but piston rings were not changed, the teardown was unexpected. I maybe consume a quart over 3000+ miles so far. Which if I remember was about the same as before. I check my oil about once a week, I only top it off if I see a significant lowering of the level, sometimes there's no consumption at all it doesn't consume equally all the time. Since this going to be the first oil change since the teardown and I read some place and confirmed that for vehicles in Russia theres a wider range of oil that is recommended. I'm thinking of going to 5w30 or 10w30. And see how performance is oil and gas consumption
