Default Help - Purchasing a LS 460 - what to look for

Hello.
Im in the market for a used Lexus and I have been searching for used GX470’s or LS460’s. This will be a commuter car for my work week which is 500-600 miles per week. I have looked at a clean 1 owner GX470 with 140k and no proof of a timing belt service. And I have looked at a superclean 1 owner LS430 with a detailed service history but no record of timing belt.

I really like the LS460 and I have 3 models that I’m going to look at this weekend. Two are 2007 models and one is 2008 model.

What shouid i look for in particular when testing and examining these cars? I have read about ABS Actuators and front control arms being issues. In addition to these is there anything else I should keep an eye out for. Will those two items continue to be an issue throughout the life of the car or has the issue been resolved?

The goal here is to get a car that I can take to 300k or more. I know there is maintenance needed for that, but I don’t want a headache of a car.

And feedbsck is welcome.

Get the newest model you can find/afford. I had a 2007 LS, liked it, but wouldn't buy another - too many "teething" problems.

Get the LS and the GX for when the LS is in the shop and/or blizzards. That's what I do it and it works well.

If you're sticking to those two years, certainly shoot for an 08. Make sure you sign up for the Lexus Owner Site and take a look at the service record of the car you considering. See what has been done or not done over the years.

Thanks for the input

I still have one more LS460 to look at. It looks clean and has no accidents but it started life in Brooklyn Ny and I’m not crazy about buying cars with hard city miles on it.

I also have a clean 1 owner GX 470 with 140k and and no proof of timing belt. It’s from up state NY so I have to go back and see what kind of rust is in the bottom but the body and interior are almost perfect. Negotiated a good price on it assuming I’ll need to do a timing belt.

I absolutely love the way the LS rides. But after reading all the threads I found on the 07-08 460’s I may lean towards the GX.
09 and up LS460’s are going out if my price range.

why not just buy the GX and change the timing belt? having the timing belt service done is great, but if the price is right, not having it done is fine.

Hi, Bobdigital. Honestly if you have a $14k budget, my experience is that you cannot have a relatively low mileage LS460. One good aspect about LS460 is that you don't need to worry about the timing belt issue.

Is engine tranquility an important concern for you? If so, you may want to look for older LS430. Smooth acceleration with no roars. No kidding. FYI, in the Houston area, you can have an approx 100k miles 2006 LS430 well below your budget; given that you don't mind about the age of the car too much. Replacement of timing belt included in the 90K service costs about $1200 done at my local dealership. If you are willing to spend that money, I would recommend you to get the water pump job done together with roughly $400 more. In other words, if the mileage of a LS 430 is about 15k miles less or more than 90k, you may want to confirm with the dealer if the 90k service was performed. This can be a room for bargain.

I cannot comment on GX since I have never had one. Good luck to your car hunting!

If you're doing 500+ miles a week, that's a lot in a GX comfort wise and gas wise. My experience may be unusual, but I have 125K on my 2007 and have never had a repair. At least mechanical, the damn drip rails keep peeling.
