I was looking at a possible LS460, it is a 2011 but looking at the history it had more then its share of issues including of course bad control arms and heater assembly but I saw where the customer said the chrome trim/paint is peeling around the stereo and looking at the picture it certainly shows it underneath the temp buttons, it looks terrible and is a eyesore. Has anyone had this, has anyone fixed it, replaced the part?
happened to mine, I just used a MR clean to light sand the whole thing, its not great but looks better than the chrome peeling. I have a 2011 haven't had any other issues have 106k on it. (had the sunroof rubber trim replaced from dealer due to cracking, its a common problem with ls460s so check on that as well)

It looks like a really light grey finish would be left if you sand it.
you are right its like a lighter finish , if you make it all even its not as bad (its not great as it comes from factory) but other option is to replace the whole Nav unit, the trim isn't sold by itself unless you can score one off eBay and they are really hard to come by.

Someone around here sanded and painted theirs with a chrome-like paint, others have taken it into a body shop and had them repaint/repair it with good results.
Unfortunately this is a common issue on these. Mine has it as well, but it does little to affect my overall enjoyment.
It's part of the nav unit and cannot be removed as far as I know.
That figures. Wish they spent more money on making sure that paint does not peel and is such a eyesore, it is almost a deal breaker for me. It would be extremely difficult to try to repaint that piece while it is in the car, with a brush you are sure to get streaks, spraying is almost out of the question unless you protect the entire interior which will be a pain.
There was a post on this forum last year, same issue. Somebody found the trim piece without the NAV attached to it on ebay. Do a search and see if you can find the post.
