If it's anything like the 460, the oil should be no higher than the uppermost hole on the dipstick. If it's higher, you need to have the dealership take care of it. Too much oil can cause foaming, which would be harmful to the engine. Let us know how it works out.

Dealers invariably overfill cars. Rarely heard of any problems developing in practise.

Question. I replaced oil today drained out about 8qts. Replaced 8qts the dip stick is reading at the top notch. About a week ago i had to add a qt and half to get back to near full level. We all know the cap is 9.1 or so. So could there be a qt just hiding?

I let it drain for several mins. So do you all find this common?

I went about 6k on last oil change. So when i added a qt and half that seemed on target for engine burn off that these motors will do. I changed the oil last last Aug.

lot of factors that could be in play. Car on a slant/incline when draining.....engine was still hot when you drained it.....oil filter housing and filter still holding oil or wasn't drained?

Yes, i had just driven it so it was warm. Used ramps but i think most of us use ramps. I did replace the filter.

Was not on a high incline just enough for me to get under it.

Oil cap is 8.6 and 9.1 with filter change.

fkn useless man , this happened to me so many times

They overfill it then are too lazy/proud to admit its a problem and tell you its fine

Until you blow a seal or something, in which case u bring it back to them for a repair so its a win win from their perspective

Here is a question on this subject. The other day, I was checking the oil level on my wife's car. No Problems there. I checked on my LS460 (was cold, I let it run for about 3-5 min), there was no oil showing on the dipstick. I dropped in quart and checked it in the morning. It appeared to have nothing. I drove it to work. When I got to work, the oil level was fine up to normal level. I see no problems here.

Is this common ? When your motor is cold, it will not show ANY oil or is this a sign of another problem ?

No, its not normal. There shouldn't be a huge difference between hot and cold and if you're reading no oil cold, then there's a problem. Are you sure the dipstick is pushed all the way in?

Yes all the way down. I tried to check it 3-4 times when it showed none to make sure. Is there anything that can explain this difference ?

The oil in the car is clear (just like fresh oil), so I used a new rag and assure you it was not finding anything accept at the very tip.

It seemd Odd, and spending some time in google, the general thought is to drive the car for like 15 min and shut off the car for about 5 min before checking as the oil will get in use in the whole car instead of sitting in the pan. Not sure this is just for older cars and not more modern cars tho.

Car seems to drive fine and when I checked it right after driving, it seems full with no problems and no signs of it being low at all.

Personally I only check the oil when the engine has been running at full operating temperature. If the level is fine at that temperature, then it's fine.

That is why I asked. If you spend time on google searching, it's a 50/50 thing hot or cold. My car is fine after driving it for a 1/2 hour. If it sits overnight, it does not show any oil and that is what made me wonder..
