I dont' recall seeing the info when I read through the thread the first time so apologies if this has been answered but, what kind of cable is being used to connect? What's the connection type on your laptop running Techstream?

It's a cable supplied with the disc on ebay...connects to the laptop via USB, to the car via the OBDII port under the dash. Easy-peasy.

A quick question that I hope that someone can please answer. I have an old BMW F30 cable with the same obdII pin outs as the Lexus cable, but it uses the network connection (cat5 or 6/utp), not the usb.

Will this cable work or is it too slow of a connection (I believe usb is faster)?

Thanks in advance.

Um...well...that's a good question, and while I like to think of myself as an IT hardware library of info, you got me on that one.

I think what the problem will be is the software will not 'ping' the network port, only the USB.

Thanks for the reply mckellyb

That does make sense, now that you mention it. Maybe I'll just have to give it a try and see what happens. The worst thing that could happen is that it doesn't work.

Thanks again.

Hey mckellyb I sent you a message requesting help with the installation. Did you receive it?

That won't work because the Toyota/Lexus software expects to connect via a serial connection over USB and doesn't use the network at all. Furthermore, the pins that the BMW F30 cable uses for its network connection are different from the CAN pins that are needed for Toyota/Lexus communication. But any standard J2534 cable should work (over USB).

I know this because we're currently working on adding support for BMW F-chassis models to Carista

Thanks Carista! That's what I wanted to know. I used ESYS for coding our old BMW and it's a bit confusing because it's in German, but thanks to google translate, it worked out.

By the way, your software for Lexus Rocks!

Yeah, BMW coding tools are ridiculous. That's why we're simplifying things and building Carista for those BMWs with the same easy interface that we have for Lexus.

Found this cleaning out the garage yesterday and even have a few old laptops laying around. Guess it's time to jump on this

This has been asked no one has answered yet re: http://www.ebay.com/itm/152191859688?rmvSB=true&rmvSB=true

Does anyone know? Getting very late...only one left.

That's excessively expensive, and there's no need to shop outside the US.

Don't pay more than $20, shipped. If you do, you have been ripped off.

I think all of the cables/discs are the same, honestly.

Try finding one for $20 compatible with Windows 10.

I paid $16.95 for the disc/cable combo which is running, right this second, under 64-bit Windows 10. It's connected to my car, which is idling (adjusting the suspension), via an MSI GT80, one of the more advanced "laptops" out there.

I'm not using a VM, dual booting, or any tricks at all.

Just because someone claims it either does or does not work on ebay doesn't mean they're either correct or an expert in IT.

Thanks for the info. I'm certainly no expert in this area but this Ebay seller has sold all 83 of these he had for sale and has a 100% feedback rating. I see you did answer my other thread on what to buy but I missed it. Thanks again.
