Default Annoying Engine Bay Covers

Every time I get an oil change, ($56 at CarMax), I find missing push down plastic tabs, and the plastic engine bay covers sliding about.

Does anyone else have this problem? Where can I get extra push in tabs?

Has anyone removed these covers? What is the effect? More dirt in the engine bay?

My BMW 750 only has a small cover on top of the engine. Everything else was open.

I stole this info from a previous post by Byroncat. If you want the Toyota clips and not knock-offs, here's the info.

The front and side clips are part # 90467-07211.
The rear clips that are on the right side rear are;
90467-A0016-C0 (3 are needed)
90467-10170C0 ( 4 are needed).

They can be found at http://www.toyotapart.com/
90467-07211 - $0.95
90467-A0016-C0 - $0.65
90467-10170-C0 - $1.03

Hope that helps,
Charles

i think the germans like to "show off" their engines so less covers..but somehow lexus even when trying to be "sporty" still has the most covers. I mean the ES and LS covers the entire engine. But the hard part is nor removing them but 2 thing : 1) inspect leaks and getting dirty over time ..

I have performed an oil change to the LS for the first time last week. It was easy and I don't know how or why Carmax needs to remove the plastic engine cover. The oil fill is just a trap door, and under the car there is just one 10mm bolt to reveal the oil filter.

If it were me I would not take my car to Carmax for an oil change. Oil change people are the least competent and I would not want them touching my car.

I was wondering the same thing as Devh. Why would they remove the engine cover? The only thing I can think of is some of these cheapee places like to hunt around for other "extras" to ding the unsuspecting with.

That being said, the Lexus clips are the worst design I have seen.

It's part of their inspecting everything else.

I highly doubt they will know what to look for and may end up missing one of the lock clips that hold the air filter together. These engines are not too sophisticated but having someone other then a wise and experienced mechanic or the dealer could end up doing more harm then whatever good intentions they may have.

The free 21 point check is not exactly free. I once went to a tire rack recommend shop to get my tires changed on one of my other cars and they started rummaging though my engine bay not knowing what they were doing and breaking on of the clips on the air filter housing.

The next time you go to CarMax for an oil change, look for the missing pins before you leave. They should not be losing these. If they do, they should pay for them.

Shipping on these from toyotapart.com is outrageous if all you need is 2 or 3 of these. Clips: $3; shipping: $10. Ouch. My local Lexus dealer (Pohanka Lexus in Chantilly, Va) discounted them from $2.73 to $1.30.. slightly more pricey, but no shipping, and they sell them one at a time if that's all you want to buy. 10 for $13 seemed reasonable, so now I have spares. Not worth the gas to/from to only buy 2 at a time.

On a side note - I had to give someone a jumpstart, and got to learn WHY having extras of these is useful. dropped two of them in the engine bay, never to be seen again.

Letting Car Max touch your Lexus might be a mistake to begin with.

Replacing the clips for a few dollars is the cost you pay for dealing with Car Max to begin with. The cheap cost of their work is quickly replaced with the lingering feeling of a job poorly done.

If you are taking your car apart to give another person a jump start you might want to consider letting them use your triple AAA card or use one of these.
