Question APGS: How do you like it?

Advanced Parking Guidance System

Do you use it? A lot? Do you find it useful? Too slow? Or do you think it's a redundant toy? What has worked for you?

It took me two tries without the aid of the manual to get it right. Since then however, it's been a hit or miss; either because the box ends up crooked, or adjacent objects are too close. I'm turning to the manual now to see if there's a better way, even though I have confidence that I will pick it up fast enough eventually.

Let us know your experiences with this tool/toy...

I find it about useless. I've practiced in a parking lot - so I don't hold up traffic on a street. I can get the box OK on the perpendicular parking, if I start far enough away. On the parallel parking, it is pretty slow. Too slow for me to use it in traffic. I thought it would be a great and unique feature for the car, although I didn't choose to buy it (it came with the exec package). I wish it were more useful. I find the parking sensors much more useful (although they don't prevent scrapes on the bottom of my front bumper - see my other post). Especially in unfamiliar parking lots with random posts, it prevents me from hitting something.

I only use it to show friends that ask about it. It has a nice gee whiz factor.

Primarily a display of technology by Lexus and although it likely will be improved going forward I think its too slow and cumbersome now although it may save on paint and body work for seniors with deteriorating parking skills.

I am ashamed to admit that I never tried it. The salesman showed my how it works when I purchased the car, but he even had some trouble with it. So, I never had the urge to even attempt it. As others have already stated though, I love the parking sensors along with the back up camera. I use these all the time.

Default Who says the LS has no thrill?

Who says the LS has no thrill?

Driving backwards between two other cars, no hands, the wheel spinning left and right on it's own, trying not to go too fast or too slow, using a system you only partly trust because it rarely finds a spot it likes in the first place?

Plenty of thrill!

Seriously, though, as it's currently implemented, this feature provides no benefit, other than if this is to become a real feature in future cars then Lexus needed a release 1.0 (or maybe even 0.5) to be tested by lots of users.

As anyone who's used this knows, the problem is in the identification of an acceptable parking spot. Once found, the car does the actual parking flawlessly.

I played around with APGS when I first got the car. I too find the feature "not worth it."

However, I'm very glad Lexus introduced it with the first LS 460. It seemed to bring much attention to the car from the Press. Great marketing ploy, IMO. It shows Lexus as a continually innovating company; and sets it apart from the others. Just an extra "pride factor" for me as an owner.

Ditto to what JLAWR just wrote. My thoughts exactly.

Besides, I live in the Boston area. If you take more than 2 seconds to back the car in, someone has already driven in and taken your space!
