You can manually shift the gears to the 8-spd setting at low speed, but the engine will not have enough torque in low to drive around town, so your car will lurch and it will affect your fuel consumption in a negative way. I live on a hill and use the manual mode mostly to reduce speed going downhill. In hard accel mode, the engine has plenty of torque in Auto through all the gear sets, unless you're carrying or towing a heavy load. If you want a little more kick, Sport mode should provide you with plenty of oompf to spare. This transmission has got it all and is arguably the most advanced out there, and your fuel will be at its most optimal efficiency when it is left in Auto letting the ECU do the thinking, the engine to supply the motive power and the tranny to transmit the power to the wheels.

I use the manual mode for braking quite often.

I'm sure it saves on brake wear and the frequency of replacement will be extended to some degree.

leaving it in 8 speeds will not do anything.

it just means it will decide what gear to use by itself until the 8th gear. for example, if you put it on 4, it will not shift past 4, if you put it on 6, if will not shift past 6, until you move the shifter to the next gear.

if you put it on 4, it will decide itself when to use 1,2,3, and 4. it will not just keep it on 4th gear, cause obviously, that wont work.

hope this helps. putting it on 8 is probably the same as putting it on D

bingo, most people still have trouble understanding the sport shift. it tells the highest gear the car can be in, it does not mean the gear the car is in.

and when you put from D to S, the computer will select the gear (4 or 6, etc...) depending on your current speed. if you are on local, it will likely be 4. if you are on freeway, it will go to 6

I use the manual for slowing down.

What I noticed that I can be driving at 220 km/h (138 m/h)and when shifting to manual, it drops to the 6th gear, not the 7th, or 8th gear. but the RPM still OK
