Accuracy of Nav System (2008 LS460)
I have had my 2008 LS460 for 3 months now and am convinced that the accuracy of the Nav system is not as good as it should be. The location of the car on the map screen is 300-400 feet off location from where it actually is. When I push the Map/Voice button on the right side of the screen while the car is travelling a street, the street address that appears on the screen is 300-400 feet from where the car actually is. Also, when I am parked in my driveway, the location of the car on the nav screen shows that I am about 400 feet down the road and 4 houses away in my neighbor's driveway.
Anyone else out there noticed inconsistencies regarding location of their vehicle on the map screen?

I'm with Rominl on this one - if the location cursor is consistently 300-400 ft. off, the system needs to be calibrated.
Modern nav systems are capable of accuracy to within 10 feet in most cases.
I say if it's off that much, have the dealer recalibrate it.

compared to my last car, an infiniti m45, this nav seems much more accurate. it seems spot on for turns and off-ramps and addresses. i also like that it will take me to an exact address, not just a range of addresses as in the infiniti.

Thanks everyone for your inputs, It seems the consensus is that my Nav system needs to be calibrated. I have my scheduled 5k mile service coming up on Friday. I will talk to my service rep about the calibration. Thanks again.

You can calibrate it yourself. The directions are in the manual.

VERY “general area.” If you are looking for a building in a large commercial
complex, forget it! Taking you to the exact location is much more valuable
than just telling you where to turn off I-95.
BE GLAD that a recalibration will fix you up. With MB, there’s no recalibration
solution for its way outdated technology!

Took the words right out of my mouth... Other than the occasional highway exit that doesn't exist or streets that lead nowhere, the system is topshelf. It ain't perfect, but the nature of this beast is in a constant state of flux, so it is inaccurate (1%-5%) the moment it leaves the developer's manufacturing facility. I was toying with a Magellan Maestro 4250 all this week in Las Vegas (Costco... returned it), and while it was an excellent tool, even the sharpest tools can lose their edge sometimes. On a side note, I will go to Washington this March to buy it again as it will be on sale for $249, and at that price it's a steal - great for out-of-town trips. Magellan's MSRP is $500.

It's true you can calibrate it yourself, but the degree to which his unit is off makes me think it ought to be looked at by the dealer.
The location icon on my '06 Infiniti M45 was off by maybe 10 or 12 feet (which might not sound like much, but it showed me past an turn or intersection or exit by the time I actually reached it). I tried and tried to calibrate it myself to correct that and it would always revert back to the erroneous position.
I never did get the Infiniti to show my position properly.

As far as the POI's they are usually off w/ nav, on all systems. I've gotten to experience more than a few company's nav systems (Dodge, Toyota/Lexus, Benz) and they have all been off by about 10-12 feet. But 3-400 that does sound pretty far off

I believe that 10-12ft is normal as the accuracy is controlled by DOD. During the Gulf War-II DOD jacked the inaccuracies to 20ft+. FYI. I have no known source for this information other then our Chief Surveyor telling me that he had to manually adjust the data from his GPS based transit instrument to compensate for the inaccuracy from a fixed benchmark.
