Cleaning out the front of my LS from a one-year coolant leak. I'd like to clean the cam gear and any coolant hiding behind it.
In the manual it shows a SST to remove it. I had done the timing belt on this car and my friend had removed this gear easily. Now it won't budge.
He's away overseas and I can't get hold of him.
Any way to remove this without the SST?
I tried to use a screwdriver unsuccessfully to push it off and put a tiny nick in one of the splines when the screwdriver slipped. It's very small. Is this going to be a problem? I don't think so - can't really feel it.
The gear has two threaded holes 8mm in it to screw in a puller. Flat bar stock with two holes and two 8mm bolts will pull it very easy. You might have to stack washers to get the right grip. The bolts don’t have to thread in very far.Use a needle file to dress the nick when you have it removed.
If you mess with the camshafts or anything in that area be very carefull its super easy to mess with the cars vvti and make the car run like crap. I know to replace the cam seals you have to take the camshafts out goodluck with everything.
Thanks to everyone for responding. I let sleeping dogs lie and decided not to take the gear off or remove the nick since it was so small. It also looked like the gear had some sort of coating on it so I didn’t want to fiddle with it too much. Thanks for all the help. Front of the engine is almost back together - just waiting on a VSV valve to put the intake manifold back on.

Thanks. The seals don't seem to be leaking and I don't want to do additional work if I don't have to. I read the manual about removing the camshafts and that seems like a lot of work. Maybe that'll be a project for a rainy day!

No problem yah my buddy who has been a mechanic for 20 years and owns his own shop he was hesitant about doing the cam seals due to removing the camshafts, the vvti, etc. He said if there not leaking leave them alone. If you end up doing them I would make sure you have an entire day set to the side just to make sure you dont rush and can take your time with it.

For me one day will likely turn in 3-4. I tend to work slow and be a bit OCD. Things usually break and I have to go buy new parts. But thanks for the advice. If I dive into that job at some point I'll let you know.
