my cam seals have some oil showing and i think its time for the replacement. i am at about 130k on my 97 sc300. anyone know how to take them out and put new ones in. i have tools and i know how to work on cars but i just wanted to know whats the best way of doing it if anyone has ever sone them. any help would be appriciated.

 

pretty simple, remove serpentine belt, remove timing covers remove timing belt remove cam gears remove valvecovers remove back timing belt cover(metal cover behind cam gears) then remove cam end caps, remove old seals, clean area reinstall new seals and install everything else in order bam! i change em out alllllll the time on audis as they leak like a mother

 

If you would like to do them faster, leave your valve covers on. Get down to where the cam gears are removed and the metal cover is removed. Then take a 1/8 inch drill bit and CAREFULLY drill through the seal... do not let the drill bit go to far. That will create a lovely little hole to get a tool into to pull it out without doing any damage to surfaces. It also releives the tension of the entire seal so it comes out easily and nicely. I do it that way with every seal I change including the front main. Just make sure you use a nice sharp bit so it cuts easily without having to push in to hard.

To install the new seal, get a large socket and carefully tap in the new seal untill it is nearly flush and WALLA! done.

 

You can use a small self-taping screw and "CAREFULLEY" run it in in the middle if the seal and pill it out with a pair of wire cuters. When reinstalling fill the gap form the out side of the seal and the inside with axel greas. This will help keep the spring in place. Use a socket the same size as the seal and when the seal is started, drive it in this the socket and a "LITTLE" hamer (No BFH).
