Default Timing belt vvti gear removal

I am in the middle of my tb job. I am trying to remove the vvti to change the seals, I can not remove the final Allen bolt to remove it. I have the valve cover off to hold the gear from moving but I am afraid since it tends to move a little. Can the vvti gear move than 30% counterclockwise?

Yes. The VVTi cam gear has 30 degrees of movement left and right. That Allen bolt was tough for me too. If you have the valve covers off you'll see the naked cam shafts. Towards the middle you will see a hex on the shaft itself. Use a crescent wrench to firmly grip the hex so that the shaft does not move so you can remove the Allen bolt in front of the cam gear. Hope that helps.

One more thing, when putting the gear back together, the manual states that you bolt the gear on. Once tight, you rotate it clockwise as far as it can go and hold that position for timing belt installation. I hope you marked the gears.

Do hold the cam shaft as VIP161 mentions.

You should also be replacing the valve cover gaskets, cam seals and resealing the front cam caps.

I got the crank bolt off with easy, but I'm afraid to strip the Allen!! I'm holding the cam shaft like VIP mentioned, I'm pb blasting the hell out of the Allen and nothing.

I have had to use a cheater bar with the creasent holding the cam resting on the head; applying smooth gradual force.

You can do it, make sure your tools are square...

This is old, lol. The TB job was done that day. Actually, after a few months my vvti gear started leaking so I had to remove the gear again. Update, the car has no leaks, I installed a new gear from Sewell. For the gear, I just used a hex with a socket.

Would you be so kind and share the manual for TB and cam seals replacement? I'm planning to do it next week, my crank seal blow up and leaked all of the oil. Sorry for the resurrecting the post :0.
Thanks,

I am worried about messing up the timing on the vvti gear I’m scared that I am not going to be able to line up the cake gear properly with the notch bc it has some play. I’m curious if the gear sets itself back where it is supposed to be so I can make sure it is in timing but I’m not entirely sure how it works. It seems I just physically turn the gear clockwise ?
