Default Cracked windshield...

I think there should be a law requiring pickup trucks to have some kind of rock / mud flaps. Every time I have had rocks shot my way it's from a dang pickup truck. I was probably at least 8 car lengths behind the pickup too. Multiple times over this past year I have had pitting caused by this and then last night a nice 5 inch crack. Does not make it any better that I already replaced the windshield when I purchased the car a little over a year ago. Such a pain.

Insurance company is sending someone to see if that can prevent further cracking but I know seeing those cracks are going to bother the hell of me. I think windshield number 2 will be coming before too long.

Unfortunately, USAA does not offer free replacement.

That crack looks way too big for it not to be replaced.

I agree about trucks having flaps, in my state they have a law on the books if the truck is lifted it has to have flaps, but I'm not sure how much it's enforced.

Be very cautious selecting the glass shop that replaces the windshield. Much has been written here already about the manufacturers of replacement windshields - but the actual installation can be done wrong. If not done correctly, it could lead to premature rust around the perimeter of the windshield > pillars and roof. If your comprehensive insurance covers replacement for a flat $50 (many do), ask Lexus of South Atlanta what shop replaces windshields for them, and take it to that shop directly.

Thanks for the advice. I think it might be beyond saving too. USAA, a great insurance company, does not offer any glass coverage. Not too happy about this part but overall their prices are much better then the competition. For some reason the windshield polices seem to vary between state to state. I had an independent shop install Pilkington glass when I purchased the car a little over a year ago.

Yes, Pilkington is fine, and you'll need replacement rain sensor tape as well.

I had mine replaced 4 years ago when a small star could not be repaired and spread. I requested a OEM Lexus windshield form the Insurance company (zero deductible) and got it. No problems since.

Well, crack already spread another 6 inches. Just ordered a new top molding and going to go with Pilkington again.

At least the price is good. $185.00 installed. USAA uses Safelite with a $500 deductible. What a racket...

What is the part # on the top moulding? Is it a cosmetic issue?

I'm n the market for a new windshield soon, not cracked but badly sand pitted.

It's mostly cosmetic. When I first replaced the windshield a year ago I did not order the top OEM molding. They used a standard molding. It works fine but is not as pretty.

It is a good deal. It's the same company that did mine a year ago and I have had no issues. Safelite wanted $385. Shopping around really does pay off.

Nice job on shopping around that's a great price!

Having lived in ATL for many years, I agree it is bad with lots of pickup trucks flinging rocks on the highway. Having moved here a few years ago, I can attest that the DFW area is even worse with what seems like wall to wall jacked up pickup trucks.
