Diff Fluid Change 04LS DIY
I own a 04 LS430 with just over 100,000 miles. I checked the rear diff and it has the sticker indicating it requires the synthetic 75W-90. The manual says to use the geniune toyota fluid but nobody carries it (only in bulk).
Is it okay to use a different brand that meets the requirments and are there any suggestions?

Manual specs GL5 75W-90... I used OTC Full Synthetic 75W-90, any high quality Synthetic Gear oil that meets spec in manual should suffice. There may be a TSB I think I saw awile back that changed the spec to 80W-90 but don't quote me on that... regardless you can't buy that OTC.
Tip - Make sure you can open the fill plug before draining to ensure you can refill before you dump the fluid and then can't drive it somewhere for help at that point... I also like to check if it was full (should trickle out some with diff fluid at operating temp (expands) and on level surface... good confidence interval.
Fill with vehicle on level surface until it trickles out... once it stops close it up to torque spec.
While your under there re-torque the drive shaft flange bolts... a few of mine were loose... this is called out in manual but seldom done I think...

This is very heavy duty synthetic gear lube and is designed for use in big rig trucks. It meets testing standards for wear and long duration change intervals set by the manufacturers of these vehicles such as MACK, DANA, EATON, MB and others. Based on my research, this is a much better product than any of the other over the counter consumer grade options.
This is not to say that the other products are no good, just that this product may be better since is meets so many stringent specs.

It's a diff, chuck any old 75 90 in there.
Nothing special about these types of diffs.
I will wait for someone to come along and correct me because they have a friend of a friend who filled their car with a non branded fluid and seized their diff.

As long as the fluid meets the manufacturer spec for the type, you'll be fine. The main point is maintaining the additive package for lubricating and keeping the parts happy. Following the regular drain intervals insure this. Make sure to get the proper gaskets for both fill and drain bolts.
