Default Help and Expert Advise Needed

Hello,

I hope someone can shed some light on this for me,

I am helping a friend with his car (LS430 V8) 2002-2003 and we are getting the following problem.

When he sets off he gets the VSC light on the dash then immediately after the engine management light.

We have plugged in the computer and at first we get:

P1651 VSV ( vacuum switch valve ) for ACIS ( Acoustic Control Induction System )

Then once he has ran the engine, so its warm and has been obver 4000rpm we get the next two codes pop up:

P1349 VVT System Malfunction (Bank 1b)
P1354 VVT system malfunction Bank 2

I hope one of you geniuses can help us out.

Thank you in advance

Rob

He'll need new VSV for ACIS. It not an easy job, involving taking off the intake manifold. VSV (vacuum solenoid valve) is not very expensive. It fairly common malfunction on old 3UZFE's.

As to VVTi malfunctions it can be anything from slipped timing belt, weak timing belt tensioner, Oil control valves (there's two - 1 on each head, easily replaceable), dirty VVTi actuators (won't go there), just a glitch from ACIS malfunction (not likely tho).

Just FIY, ACIS stands for Acoustic Control Induction System. It's basically a flap inside intake manifold, that is controlled by engine computer via VSV (it applies vacuum to the flap driver). This flap controls intake geometry, enabling to achieve max performance.
VVTi is variable valve timing (intelligent). Here computer is able (via Oil control valves) to adjust rotation phase of each camshaft, enabling to ..... blah blah.

I've never heard of acis vsv .... I highly doubt
It's common problem , I work on 2 1uz Gs and they both combine for almost 500k never such problem. Charcoal canister "purge valve " vsv was changed on one

Default Thank you very much

Thanks for the response guys.

I feel i need to start with the easy parts (cheap parts), so first we will look at the VSV Valve I have the information for doing this small but big job.

From there what would you replace for the VVTi issue? i was thinking the "Oil control valves"??

MDSC.... are you suggesting we change the Charcoal canister "purge valve " first?

One other question is, do you feel any of these can be related? and could be causing the VSC light issue?

Many thanks again guys!!

If you really want to fix it yourself and fix it right without throwing darts I would get a factory Lexus service manual and go thru the proper diagnostic steps.

Lol guys... rgreenwood, please disregard blabber about 'charcoal canister' etc. vsv is just abbreviation for vacuum solenoid valve. There's more than one on the car. Let's replace everything with similar sounding names!!!

Replace vsv for acis, test drive, if vvti dtc reoccur - replace both oil control valves.

VSC lights up whenever critical engine DTC's are detected - just as a precaution.

MDSC, vsv for acis malfunction occured on 100% of 01-03 and 04-06 ls430 vehicles i encountered (on restyle vehicles it seems to occur sooner). This is a very common fault at around 180-200 thou kms.

BTW, these steps ARE from factory manual...

Ok, So i will first replace the VSV. This was the first error on the car so i suppose its a good starting point.

It has never been changed so, we will see... will keep you guys posted!

I have seen a few online manuals for this car, do you guys recommend any?

Many Thanks once again!
