Default need some advice

Hello all -

I'm moving to Tucson, Az. over the summer to finish school - my 2001 LS has 130K on her and runs wonderfully - I currently run 5w-30 but am thinking that perhaps I should run something different as the temps can get into 110-115 on hot days and the car will be doing a lot of stop and go driving. The Lexus owner's manual, on the very last page says ""recommended oil viscosity - SAE 5W-30 if normal temps are below 100F" - should I make a change and if so, to what?

Thanks for your thoughts...

I'd call the local Lexus dealer in Tuscon - ask them what they use. I think a high quality synthetic 5-30 would be just fine but they might recommend a higher viscosity oil. Or you may stay with 5-30 but consider changing at 3 k intervals just over 3-4 summer months if you drive a lot of miles. The greatest damage out in that sun/heat will be to your paint and interior if you don't protect it. I'd wax it a couple of times in summer and try to keep it garaged or protected from the sun/heat as much as possible. But you know that looks like you live in Az already.

That's a god idea - calling the Lexus dealer in Tucson - I'll do that - and yes, I def. need to look after the paint in this sun.

Thanks for you reply.

Thanks for you reply.
The interior also needs protection from direct sun. An internal windshield screen is an absolute must. Install it every time you park the car outside. Even so, the interior of the car can easily reach 150F on a 110F day. If you can and are willing to install a car cover, it will deep the internal temp to 130F. A car cover will protect both the paint and the interior of the car and is highly recommended. If you can, install it on your car when at work if you have to park unshaded.

Be careful with that car cover. Putting a car cover on a car that isn't washed will cause the light dust and dirt on the paint to act as a light abrasive causing light scratches in your clear coat. A car cover should be put on a freshly cleaned car.

Agreed. I covered my 92 SC400 at work for 8 years after initial purchase and it looked virtually new at the end of that period. Every evening after work I would use a dust brush or wipe down the car if needed. I could almost sell car covers after that experience.
