Default oil change

Hi,

I have a 88,000 miles on my 99 ES 300.
Since winter is coming soon and its time for my oil change, some people
have told me not to change the oil to the recommended 5-30W oil thats specified
by the manual, but a 10-40W oil ?
Or should I just stick to whatever is recommended in the manual?

What do you guys think? Should I change types of oils in the winter and in the summer ?

Btw, I am using Castrol Synthetic... is that good?

Thanks

Tim.

stick with your 5W-30 synthetic if you are not having any problems.

Since you are over 75,000 miles you might want to consider going to a 10W-30 high mileage formula synthetic.

i run the synthetic cause I like the fact that it is more liquid than conventional oils in the New England winters. Hate those frigid cold morning start ups.

timoc42, my manual shows 5w-30 at almost all temps and with no time/mileage limit so I'm sticking with it.

Using synthetic for all the reasons mentioned on many threads here and several auto reps who recommended it ; seems the most cost-effective way to protect a ~$2k engine.

Continue to use the same 5W-30. The temp will not vary enough to justify the change. MAKE SURE THOUGH, ONCE YOU START USING SYNTHETIC THAT YOU STICK WITH IT. Don't ever switch from conventional oils to synthetic and vice versa. Damage can and will be done to your engine.

Lex Tech.....why is switching from syn to dino bad for engine? I just had an oil change done on my Chevy Silverado today and went from Mobil 1 to what the dealer uses. I brought it up to the rep and he didn't view this as a prob. I continue to use Mobil 1 on my SC 400

it's not a problem to switch back and forth.

Not being able to switch back to conventional oil from synthetic is a myth created by the oil conglomerates to keep you buying the expensive stuff. This has been argued for as long as synthetic has been in use.

I have read it over and over (the auto section of my newspaper, CL, LOC) and heard more times than not on syndicated radio auto talk shows (The Auto Doctor, Click and Clack, etc) that it is a myth and only a myth.

As a matter of fact, my lexus dealer just put conventional oil in on my 30,000 mile service and they/and I have been putting in synthetic since the first oil change. If it were such a big deal, Lexus would have to track this in their computer so that they would know at least what they put in as to not open themselves up to negligence.

Stevie, yea, I noticed the other day when I provided the bottle of synthetic for the free oil change that there is no mention of it on the receipt! For oil it just says N/C - guess so cause it cost Lexus nothing but it's on the dealers order.

Next time I get an order written, after I have made my notes about the perfect condition of the car, no wood scratches, providing synthetic, etc. I will get a copy of it.

Might also take it to the dealer that has synthetic and see what appears.
