Default Steering wheel cover removal

What is the next step after removing the 3 screws from the cover? The upper and lower part still stick together after the screws are removed. Does anyone know how to undo the upper and lower part without breaking it??? : )

Cool Tsib st001-04

This TSB is a good one to use as a guide for getting to the "guts" of the steering column. I know it says 2001-2004, but my 2005 has the same setup... i also expect that the 2006 are identical.

Good luck!

Thank you DDlexus! I took the 3 screws off the cover....I can feel it being loose ....now im guessing i have to pop it open somehow. I just dont know how to undo the clips that are still holding the 2 steering column cover pieces. I'm too scared to break the clips inside.......

wiggle it around a little. They should just pop apart in the center of both sides. I shook mine lightly and it fell apart. I wish i took a pick for you to see the clip location and girth. It shouldn't break. From what i recall, it was not a delicate snap/fitting.

I know this is an old thread, but I didn't want to start another one on the same topic.

Do you have to disconnect the battery cables to prevent accidental airbag deployment before removing the steering column cover? I need to lubricate my steering column.

Thanks ahead of time

Absolutely disconnect battery to avoid accidental airbag deployment and possible injury to yourself.

Definitely +1 on unhooking the negative cable.

IT is a cautionary step to take just to be safe, and it would take you literally a minute or two to unhook the negative.

Man, even when it's unhooked I'm scared for my life that it will explode in my face.

yes remove the negative cable from the battery and then step on the brakes. this will drain out any power left in the system.

Thanks, everyone. Y'all are right. It just takes a minute and the peace of mind is well worth it.

Hopefully, I can tackle the steering column lubrication this weekend.
