Attached is the only TSIB I'm aware of that addresses steering column noise on the 02 LS430.

I have a 2002 LS430UL sometimes the column squeaks when I enter or leave the car. How much do you think it will cost (in Ontario, Canada?) to fix it under that TSIB?

I have the same issue and have been told by the dealer and an independent shop that it is very expensive to fix if it is out of warranty because it involves a lot of labor. Looking at the TSIB that was posted, I now understand - that looks like a lot of work.

Another option which has been recommeneded is to simply disable the retraction. Does anyone know how to do this without taking it to the dealer?

Is the noise in the tilt or the telescoping. more your wheel up and down with the control and see if it makes the noise.
The telescoping is complicated and expensive, but the tilt is easy and inexpensive. There are two different motor/gear sets.
The LS400 works the same way and there has been an issue with the tilt function starting with noises.

Unfortunately it is the telescoping. Do you know if there is a way to disable it so it does not telescope.

I know that on the tilt motor that it was just a matter of disconnecting power to the tilt motor. I seem to recall something similar on the telescoping but have no details. you may want to look on the LS400 forum or post the question there.

I too, had the grinding noise in the retraction process. I downloaded the TSB so I could get my head around the details of the operation. During a New York State Inspection and service, I asked that the problem be investigated on my 2001 LS430 by the dealer, Bay Ridge Lexus in Brooklyn, NY. It required dropping a panel and lowering the steering column to lube and grease the parts. Labor was 45 minutes and the charge was around $100.00 dollars. Has been working quietly ever since.
Good Luck!

my 01 ls430 does the same thing...hopefully it's only a matter of lubing certain parts to fix.

Mine only happens in hot weather. It's not enough of a problem to pay someone to fix it.

Any repair shop with the appropriate scan tool and program card can quickly disable the "Auto Away/Return Function". Attached is the LPS list for the 01 LS ... don't think it changed much if any during the LS430 run. LPS settings are changed at no cost during the 1,000 mile / 30 day checkup.

The indie Lexus repair shop that maintains our cars didn't charge anything for making LPS settings changes when I had my 2000 LS400 in a few years ago for its first front brake job. I was told that I was the first person who had ever asked for LPS setting changes in the 10+ years they had been in business.

Mine did it, too. I saw the TSB, and had the dealer fix it. My bumper to bumper warranty had expired, and it cost me $230. However, I complained to Lexus about it being embarrassing when others rode in my "quality" Lexus, and they refunded my money!!!
If my car had still been under the 4/50, it would have been fixed for $0.

What did you use as lube/grease? And, what part did you apply the lube to?

Did you disconnect the battery too? Preventing airbag deployment...

What is the fix for the tilt problem?

This works if you can hear the internal tilt gear turning but the wheel doesn't go up and down.
