DDLexus asked me to post some details from my recent repair. On my first dealer visit in early March, the car had 30.5K miles and I asked the dealer to disable the auto steering retract. The retract / extend function was noisy. Over the past three months, the retract / extend function was getting more noisy and started jamming. Eventually it just stopped in the fully extended position, which is where I want it for daily driving. The up / down function works fine.

I took the car in this week for 35K service and asked the dealer to quote the fix. A few hours later, the service manager called and said the retract / extend motor needed replacement and the estimate was $600. (They always seem to find my maximum price point for optional repairs without my saying anything.) I gave them the go-ahead and I had to keep a loaner until the next day when the part came in.

The fix is complete and the column extends / retracts, but not very smoothly. It seems to run a bit before starting to move. (Is this normal?)

Costs and part numbers:

L89232-50050 Motor, Power Telesco - $368.35
Labor - $180

In addition, I had an oil change done and there was a misc. shop supplies of $15.23.

I didn't really miss not having the extend / retract function, but I have a recurring foot / ankle problem and having a steering column that can get out of the way is useful when my right foot acts up.

Hi Guys,
Please help
'05 LS430 won't telescope in/out, while moves up/down. I don't get any noise when try to move in/out. So far checked fuses #1, 19 and 24 they are fine.
Thanks

There are two motors associated with the steering mechanism. One motor is dedicated to tilt. The other is a telescoping motor. Sounds like the telescoping motor has died on you. It took me at least 2 hours to disassemble the dash and reach the telescoping motor on my LS430. It's toward the back of the column. Harder to reach than the tilt one.

Gonna try to do it myself, maybe next weekend, any tips?

Had mine disabled today when I took it in for the 60K service. No charge at JM Lexus in South Florida. Had been making a squeaking noise when telescoping out. Manual up/down works fine. Telescoping needs help. I'll live with it out for now. Great service at JM, by the way.
