Ok guys, I have decided to try to sell my 2004 LS430 myself. I really need a little bit of help with the pricing. The dealer offered me an honest $27,000, which is apparently the auction value. KBB shows about 5 to 7 thousand dollars higher, depending on wholesale/retail. I am thinking about listing it at $32,000 firm.

It's a 2004 LS430 with 45,500 miles, Modern Luxury with Mark Levinson/NAV. White exterior with tan interior. Michelin tires with only 5000 miles. I am the original owner and the car has been garage kept, only hand washed. There is one scratch on the rear bumper and 2 of the wheels have "grind" marks along the rim where the tire meets, but other than that the car is mint. I have the original mats that were never installed and there has never been any accidents/paintwork, etc.

How shall I price it for a realistic sale and where should I advertize? Ebay seems to have only dealer cars at low prices.

 

previously I thought 27k (trade-in) was too little, but after more research, 27k seems pretty realistic... (most of these are CPO) plus Modern Luxury is pretty close to base model as they come... and most 04' LS430 are "mint condition" anyways... good luck!

When I bought my car, as a CPO, I first negotiated the price by saying I did not want the CPO warranty. By denying the CPO warranty, they knocked $2,000 right off the price.

I see KillerGS4 posting about $33900 for a 2004 with 45K miles. Knock 2,000 off, you get $31,900. That's very close to the $32,000 you are listing. I'd say, by looking at the numbers in this thread alone, it's a fair retail price.

I happen to have the BLUE BOOK Used Car Guide, published by Kelly BLUE BOOK Official Guide, for used cars & trucks: For the Period: JULY-DECEMBER 2007. I find the numbers in this book AMAZINGLY HIGH!

For 2004 Lexus LS430

Excellent Condition Retail: $41,100 (add another $3,800 if it's a UL!)
GoodCondition Private Party: $34,200
Good Condition Trade-in: $29,675
Fair Condition Trade-in: $26,500

Obviously, the dealer pushed down your trade-in value to a little bit better than FAIR Condition, by offering you $500 over the "fair" cond. trade-in value.

I'm sure your car is at "good" condition value, that's $34,200, private party.

But before you list it at that price: let's see: if I were considering your car, and happen to drive by a Lexus dealer with a 2004 LS430 with CPO sitting in the lot... "holding everything else equal" I would take the CPO, for that piece of mind.

Let's consider this CPO that KillerGS4 showed us:

I think you're listing a realistic price. But how much will your final buyer negotiate, that's another story.

I listed it in the local paper at $32,500, starts tomorrow. If I can't get above $30,000, then I'll keep it.

 

$32.5K sounds like a realistic price. Another thing to do is browse Craigslist and Autotrader - build a spreadsheet of the cars, and average/even the prices out (grouped by private party and by dealer).

Also, make sure you post in Craigslist as well - it's free, easy to do, and I've sold many cars through it.

 

Well, the dealer finally moved. We've been haggling for over a month. They are now giving me an honest $28,900 for my 2004 with ML and 46K miles on a trade for a 2007 LS460. I am also getting the new car at $2,000 over invoice.
