So today I finally got around to doing that oil change...

And as ever, the part number on the filter has changed yet again!

Other than the country of origin, does anyone know of any difference? And if so, is it important? I've only ever used OEM and never had a problem with any of them.

I think there has been some part numbers superceded over the years. I use 90915-yzzd3 which I think is the current designation and supercedes the 90915-20004 number. Not sure about the YZZJ4.

 

i always use the 90915-YZZD3 as well. been using that same oil filter for many years, no complaints

 

The 20004 is an over-engineered filter that Toyota/Lexus V8 engines are equipped with at the factory. After delivery, the local Toyota/Lexus dealers use the YZZD3 and YZZD4 filters. The 20004 filter is 3x the price of the YZZD3/D4 filters for good reason. If money is no issue, you can import cases of these 20004 filters, as your local dealer will not have stock. I alternate buying 10pk cases of D3, D4, and 20004 filters whenever I buy OEM parts from Japan or UAE.

If I recall correctly from when I had both D3 and D4 side by side, the D4 filter was a few millimetres longer than the D3, and D4 is made for the Middle East market. I didn't cut open any of them, but once upon a time, someone on the Internet cut open a 20004 filter and many other filters including aftermarkets, and the 20004 was vastly superior to all the others.

 

The J4 filter is made in CHINA?! Are you kidding me? I would NEVER knowingly buy an item made in China.

I'll buy the Mexican or Thai filter before buying a Chinese filter! I hope all you US citizens would do the same. And yes, I do know that on some items, we have very little IF ANY choices, aka cellphones. (I DO read the labels on everything I can, before purchase, AND WILL ALWAYS AVOID BUYING THE CHINESE VERSION OF WHAT I'M SHOPPING FOR!)

The 20004 I bought last time from Amayama in the UAE. Good to know it's the 'proper' one, even if in hindsight.
The YZZJ4 was from a UK Lexus dealer. (But I wonder how the J4 is different from the D4?)
(Once on my first LS400 I was supplied with an OEM filter that was only 2/3 the length - different again!)

I take your point, but (1) until I opened the box I had no idea it was made in China, and (2) I'd hope that Toyota is right on top of QC wherever! TBF *some* stuff from China is as good as from anywhere else.
I'm more concerned that the spec is not as good as the 04 and what might go wrong as a result.

 

Maybe the 04 is advantageous for the running-in period when the vehicle is new, but from then on it's total overkill?

It would be great to see a cutaway view of 04 vs. D3 vs. J4 etc.....

 

Hmmm, all this talk about filters from across the pond makes me wonder if they sell ones on Temu for $0.01.

I bet the outside casing is made with paper mache.

 

I hear you. I don't care if Toyota says the CCP filters are top notch OEM quality. If I know it's from China, I'm still not going to buy it and fund their government and their military.
