Replace Air Suspension with Standard SS
Hey Gang,
My air suspension is giving up. I called the dealer and it will cost about $840.00 each. I have been trying to get a used one, but no such luck. I just called a salvage yard and one of the guys said the standard shock/spring setup will work on the air suspension replacement.
Anyone out there have ever convert air susp. to standard suspension? If you have after market shocks and springs which would you recommand and what is the going rate for them?
In the near future, i do want to put on a Veilside Body kit along with my TT setup. Therefore, lowering the car and stiffer shock is my desire.
My car is down and out right now. I need help fast. Thanks.

Healerhand,
If you find the information to convert to standard shock/spring...please LMK. I guess the best experiment would be to buy 1 front and 1 rear from salvage and give it a try. But, then you would end up buying those then buying the aftermarket spring/shock/top plates and spending loads of $$$ that way too.

whats up healerhand,
i recall from the other topic u were having the same problems with the a/s i guess its even worse now. Well "street repairguy" said he can change the factroy air shocks to coil spings setup. It just blots up...everything links up together.
you will just have the air suspension lite blinking all the time...only downfall

I am staying with AS. AS has better ride
Personally, I wouldn't spend $3360 on 4 new air suspension shocks/struts that will eventually fail again.... that's one of the reasons I refused to buy a LS400 w/ air suspension....
Good Luck though, I wish you the best!

selewis,
your are absolutely correct. AS is expensive to replace especially. I would recommand Non AS suspension for used LS400. Besides the money, AS do give better ride quality.

Well,
I can chip in on this one. I own both a LS400 with AS and with standard suspension. Absolutely, hands down the AS car walks over the standard suspension in performance, comfort and tuning ability. Hands down....period.
Have you ever seen the standard suspension LS400 cars loaded down? even with 4 people in the car...it sags in the rear sooo bad. Further, the performance and road handling of the standard suspension is weak at best. Its designed for pure smooth, soft luxury ride. Fine if thats what you want.
I want more...thats all. As far as extra expense....my 92LS with 135k miles and AS still functions fine to this day. 10years of service and over 130k miles. Where is the extra expense? Sure, if one or 2 go bad...there is cost. But, I say extend that cost over the service life of that shock and its not so bad. Heck, if I replaced a shock today....would I ever expect to replace that shock again? Prob not.
