Default Help! Fuel Gauge Reading Empty when Tank is Full

So it started just last night...i was driving all over Los Angeles and at one particular point, I do remember braking excessively hard to avoid an accident.
Anyway, an hour later, i looked at my fuel gauge and it was higher than i remembered. It was originally at 1/4...then i saw it above 3/4...
Anyway, i drove off to work this morning hoping it would fix itself but nothing happened. Before getting to work, i filled the tank up to the top and when i started up the car; the fuel gauge needle moved DOWN to below "E" or empty...
I drove a few miles, turned the car on/off a few times, and no progress.

Any concrete suggestions as to diagnoise the problem?????
I'm guessing the gauge on the cluster is working since it does move, but...
maybe its the sending unit in the trunk area or something else?
Please help!
Thanks!!

I've read it before, but i wonder why it would be an electrical short (not ruling it out though)

When i fill the tank up again, starts at E, then works its way up to Full (but only over a 50-100 mile drive, then goes as its supposed to.

Very odd.
