Default 91 ls400 fuel gauge or fuel sending unit?

My fuel gauge is in it own little world. When I fill my tank it registers full correctly. As I start driving it begins to drop and work up to 1/2 tank but when it actually gets to 1/2 tank its really supposed to be over 3/4 of a tank. As I drive some more it goes to the empty when its supposed to be 3/4 of a tank and will remain there barely moving as I drive around until I fill the tank again and then the same thing occurs. Does this sound like a faulty gauge or the sending unit in the tank. I saw a writeup somewhere about cleaning out some parts on the fuelpump and it would fix this problem anyone tried it? ThanksNel

My first symptons of a cluster malfunction were a non-accurate gauge.
It soon accelearated to no functioning gauge at all.

Unlike most here I had no other cluster problems at the time so I just dealt with the bad capacitor often referenced here.

20,000 miles later I addressed the issue of a full cluster rebuild.

Default Who did your cluster rebuild?

Was it Jim Walker or someone else?

Thanks

that is not really true, per mr whizard, who i just talked with. very good place, by all accounts. the 92 boards (mine) are 'more robust' according to him and not at all like the 93-94 ones. i confirmed this as i have none of the same caps as the 93-94. for a bad guage, he would suspect the sender and would test:

find the sender and unhook the leads- gauage should read 0. if it does, then that means the gauge is ok. if not, then the gauge prob. bad. he says the sender will send out a varying 5 v signal + or - depending on fuel level.

My caps were done locally here in Dallas.

Cluster was redone by the Wizard. No idea if he bothered to change the caps or not when he did the other service. The fuel gauge was fine when the rest of the cluster died.

See: https://www.clublexus.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=318108 for 90-92 cap info. My gauge never fluctuated like a few of you describe though... I would try replacing the parts that cost a few cents before the expensive ones...
