Ls400 audio setup thread (The Mother thread)
the remote wire hooks to the head unit. If you are using the stock hu just find an acc wire, or one that is only on with "accessories" position of the key. I'm not sure where you would find it in the trunk but they are easy to find with a dmm in the dash. The old amp probably had one
What year is your LS? I have a 97 that I would like to install a Pioneer FH-P800BT in but I'm afraid I don't have the seven inches of depth needed for the install. Of all the dashes I've seen on the forum, yours looks the most like mine. How much room is behind the radio unit? Thanks.

Anyhow, the original OEM Pioneer headunit is 160mm plus some protruding connectors, so with e.g. a Metra doubleDin mouting kit you should be fine.
(My car is a 95, which in essence is the same as your 97, i.e. a generation 2. I've done a conversion with an Alpine CDA-105Ri which is a single Din unit, but it has front, back and subw. RCA connectors, like the Pioneer you're thinking about. I also exchanged all the speakers in the car including a boxed compact Rockford Fosgate subwoofer and 6.5" DLS speakers in the four doors. Lots of work but a better sound with a lot of punch to it.
You can check my audio install in this thread, and an install of a FH-P80BT (the european version of the FH-P800BT) in this post in this very thread. Also this thread (linked somewhere here earlier too) may be of some assistance to you as it shows the wirering et al in the 95-97 LS400.

I have a 1992 LS400 and want to swap out the sub in the back. Would it be possible to just take the leads going into the actual subwoofer, and use them as as input into an aftermarket amp? I could then use the aftermarket amp to power whatever subwoofer I setup in back.
Is this actually possible or am I missing something? I have extra amps, subwoofers, wiring and time so I would really like to do this and any experience anyone has is welcome.

So then I connect the line out converter to the original wires, and then use the RCA connection to go to the amp. It has been a few years, but sounds like a plan.
Any suggestions on the best spot to attach the remote wire? I heard the antennae can work, I have spent the entire night search the forums and have not found a definite thread on that.
I was also trying to find out the feasibility of removing the amplifier in the back that powers the subwoofer and using the wiring to setup the new amp.

i haven't seen it done but in theory the signal going into the amp is low level so if you tapped it before the amplifier you shouldn't need a converter. how comfortable are you with wiring/soldering?
guess i'll share my current set-up. keep in mind this was done with the intent of selling the car (which will not be happening now) so it was just some "good enough" stuff that wouldn't take away from the sellability (word?) of the car.

eclipse avn20d with beat sonic dash kit. the hu has no rca outs and doesn't play video but it was cheap, has nav, looks good in the dash, and plugs in with no harness. the dash kit is of outstanding quality (as it should be for the price).

hi-vi cf140 coaxials in factory mount (bolt in) with a 900hz 6db hpf on them. the highs on these are perfect for my taste and if i ever took the time to run them with a proper midbass i think i'd be real happy.

tang band 4" underhung midbass. i don't know why but i always want to try different stuff knowing it won't be as good as the standard approach. these little things look like monsters and would probably perform better in a proper (sealed) install but for now they work. i really bought them because i thought they would bolt in but they didn't (nothing a drill didn't fix but that's not the point).
all in all, it's pretty disapponting. had i just done it the regular way i could have spent the money wiser but i didn't so oh well.

I have no problem soldering or taking apart the back harness. I like the look of your setup, I would like to go for a full touchscreen up front but I worry about losing the power antennae. I am going to do a full breakdown of the truck tomorrow and hopefully will post pics of the work I am doing.
well if you wanted to give it a shot you could make a splice harness using shielded rca cable, a plug, some wire taps, and probably a y connector. i could even offer to make the harness for you but i can't gaurentee it will work since i've never done it.
as far as losing the antenna there's no worries. power is supplied through the harness and the signal through the oem cable/adapter.

just unplug the antenna in the trunk, will take you 2 seconds
