Default 2nd Gen EGR pipe replacement

I have a 1997 LS400 that failed smog, I think due to a cracked lower EGR pipe. I know the pipe is cracked, so now's the time to replace it. From what I can tell, I should have somewhat easy access to the EGR pipe if I remove the Passenger side Catalytic Convertor? That accurate? I'd rather not pull the intake manifold and definatley don't want to drop the transmission. I also don't want to install a block off kit. CA smog is pretty stringent, and involves checking the ECU for cleared codes. Thanks in advance for any help.

There are two EGR pipes which one do you suspect is bad? the RH (passenger one) is shorter I think. Maybe there is enough play where you don't need to disassemble any part of the exhaust why not try first.

it’s the lower pipe that goes from the crossover to the manifold. I can easily get to the manifold end, but the crossover end is really tucked up in there. I haven’t tried to remove the convertor yet, will try on Monday when the new part arrives, unless someone says that won’t work.

i attempted to do mine, and was foiled by the last bolt at the very top at the intake manifold. i did have to remove the pass side cat (spray lots of penetrating lube to loosen the rusted hardware). a LONG extension is needed and a universal joint.

i had to take my car to a shop to finish the job due to the bolt i could not loosen (ended up rounding the head) and the shop simply grabbed the pipe with a vice grip and twisted it off. this could only be done bc only one bolt remained and the entire pipe was used to leverage the bolt loose. such as simple solution that cost me $300...i was livid as to the simpleness of it!
