Has anyone else noticed an orangish soot on the high-beams due to the daytime running lights? I have a 2002 RX300 and I've noticed that every other RX has this same problem. What causes this? Is it due to the brand of bulb or the fact that the high beam is not meant to burn at a low voltage (as in how the DRL's are lit).
hmm..are you talkin about the outside of headlight assembly...or inside? i have some crap on my headlights (also have DayTimeRunnin on my 99 ES) but i thot that was just from dirt and rain...not because of the high beams being burned/lit at lower wattage.
It's actually an orange soot on the high beam bulb itself. I realize the bulb has an orangish glow in DRL mode, but you can see the soot on the bulb when it's off. When the RX was new, there was no soot. Like I said, every RX I've seen has this same problem.
Try running the bulbs on high beam for a few minutes.
The halogen process does not work very well at low power levels and deposits may form. Different brands of bulb may behave quite differently. DRL are the high beams run at half voltage and therefor quarter power.
I had the same problem on my RX, and I brought it to the attention of the service advisor. He says it's buildup from low voltage. Warrantied. No charge.
