Default HID Problem

Every time I turn on my headlights, both headlights turn on. About 30 seconds to a minute, the driver side headlight shuts off. I can turn it off and on again and the same thing will happen.

This is a 98' GS400 with factory HID w/6000k bulbs. Is it a faulty ballast? TIA.

I would suggest swapping the components left to right. This will enable you to determine whether its a faulty bulb or ballast.

gapxguy- my xenondepot kit did the same thing. turns out the spade connector within the turn on plug wasn't seated properly so I had to modify it.

It sounds like it might be a faulty ballast and you will need to purchase another one. Sometimes with HIDS though it's hard to tell! I also have a saab 93 with HIDS and I was having the same exact issue. Everyone said it was a bad ballast, but what it turned out to be was really cheap bulbs..I returned my bulbs 2 times with the company I bought from and then decided to purchase from somewhere else and I haven't had a problem since.

As much I would hope this would be the problem, I doubt it is since it turns on every time and shuts off at the same time interval consistently.

Swapping components from left to right is a great idea, thanks for the advice.

just start with swapping the bulbs. if it still happens on the same side, its the ballast. if i happens on the other side, it's the bulbs.

Alright, I swapped in a different bulb and turns out the existing one was bad. Right when I took it out, I knew it was the bulb since the glass was cloudy.

I put in a new 6000k bulb and it's a night and day difference in color. The new 6000k bulb looks like 4300k after warming up compared to the other side which is almost 3 years old.

Looks like I'll be shopping for a matching set of bulbs now. On a better note, at least it wasn't the ballast.
