Default help: DRL's

alright. so for some time now i've been running some ultra white PIAA's in there. why is it that the color is still the same as the stock DRL's? i changed out all the bulbs and that one is the only stupid one that doesn't seem to have changed in color. how do i make it so it's not yellow anymore . help plz! thanks in advance

man, clearly you havent' checked out the lighting forum before

drl is high beam running at 50% power. so the 55w bulb is running at 27w. that's why it's yellow

now you put in super white, say it's 65w. 50% of the power that's 32w, no way it will be "bright" white.

if you want bright whire, that's a 100w bulb, so 50% is 50w. hit the high beam and you probably see fire

I would think DRL's will always be yellow. I believe car companies made them that way. If DRL's were white in color, they wouldn't serve their purpose and oncoming traffic wouldn't be able to see them as well in daylight. The whiter the light, the closer you approach the color of natural sunlight.

they designed it that way by putting 50% power. like i said if someone really inclines to put on a 100w bulb (if there is one), i bet the output would be pretty darn bright

rominl -- hang on a sec, are you guys asking/answering the same question? Yes, it's true that the DRL is basically the high beam running at reduced power, but shouldn't that only affect the birghtness/luminosity of the bulb, not the color? I have replaced my high beams with a 6000K bulb and I am almost positive my DRLs are pretty white-looking (I'll try to take a picture later)

zerovise -- are you sure you have the "ultra white" from PIAA? As far as I remembered they only sell two lines of bulbs and they are called "Xtreme white" and "Super white". The Xtreme white is rated at 4150K and the Super White is rated at 3800K color (vs. a stock halogen which runs about 3100-3200K)

well, for halogen, usually the way it works to get superwhite is by 1) have the blue tinted glass, and 2) by bumping the wattage. unlike real hid bulbs, you don't control the output color by the substance inside.

so if you think about it, your stock high beam bulb is at 55w, and during the day it's running at reduced wattage. why is it yellow? it's the same bulb, but the different color is due to the different power the bulb is running at. so that mean you stick in another bulb it's still going to look about the same, unless you put in a bulb that runs at so high power that even at the reduced wattage it's high like 40w to even 50w
