Blown sub... what to replace it with? PLEASE HELP ASAP
Hey,
I have a1998 GS400 with a Pioneer D1 hooked into the stock Nak amp.
I blew the stock sub while cranking it up real loud to fine tune the sound and I blew the sub. Now I need to replace it but the audio shop is tellin me that if Im gonna put an aftermarket sub than I MUST put in a amp to power it or I could blow the stock amp... is there any validity to that?
Any suggestions?
Please help right away because my car is going under the knife within the hour.
THANKS!

Oh... and Im not so sure what all this means exactly or how it will effect the install but I figured it may be important...
The stock sub is 6ohms... and the replacement aftermarket sub is either 4 or 8ohms (depending on what they can get in stock for me today).

You shouldn't need to replace your amp if you're not going to drive it hard, but you already blew the stock sub, so if you want to really improve your sound and get better bass, replace the woofer and add an amp. You say you want the same sound as you had, but you blew the sub while trying to get more out of it than it could faithfully produce.
The same thing happened to me! It's a well known fact that the factory AMP does suck ***** big time. But I do not want to go through the motions of changing the head unit, amp amd all speakers. I just want to change the amp. any suggestions? Please let me know. You can e-mail at djcmills@aol.com or PM me. Lexus' rules!!!!!

I just talked to a guy today who said that I shouldn't replace the sub in the back unless I want more bass. But to be honest, I don't want too much bass. I used to have 12"s in my old car, but I don't that trunk rattling anymore. I understand where you are coming from when you say you do not want anything else more. But if you blew it, then I wonder if I will do that same as well. But if I have to replace the speaker later, that is a minor change. Let me know how it sounds when you get it done.
