Default DVD Navigation Upgrade

My dealer wanted $380.00 + $90.00 installation to upgrade my wife's RX 300 (2001) Navigation system. I got the disc from Sewel Lexus for about $280.00 and upgraded it myself in about 10 minutes. If you can insert a DVD into a player, you can do this upgrade yourself!

Is this an "upgrade" or an "update"? I am guessing it has only updated the information in the system, but has not actually upgraded the system. That is, is the interferace the same? Does it look the same?

What is involved in updating the disk.? When I bought my car (2002 gS 430, Mark Levinson/Nav) they made it sound like you needed to pull the entire DVD player unit out of the car.

Default DVD Navigation

I guess it is really just an "Update", since the interface is the same. But it has new roads and points of interest. The "update" install is ridiculously easy. All I did was remove the jack whic obstructed the opening, open the DVD drawer, eject the disc, insert the new DVD, close the drawer, and not turn the car off until it was done!

Question 01 gs300

Dealer just said my dvd update was in.... they still think they're installing it for me for a generous 45 minute labor charge.

So, sounds to me like the instructions are:
1. turn on car
2. open trunk and locate dvd player
3. eject old dvd
4. insert new dvd
5. leave car on while dvd updates ecu

Sound about right? How long for step 5? I plan to pick up the dvd and install at the dealership, just want to make sure I do it right, otherwise, I'll probably need to ask the dealer for help.

Does the DVD come out od the player, or does it stay in? I assumed the database was on the DVD so the DVD needed to stay in the unit.

The old DVD is ejected from unit and you put the new DVD in. Then it runs and updates the software. Very easy to do. Even I could do it!

it worked... picked it up at the dealership, ejected the old, dropped in the new. No more than 3 minutes later, I was ready to roll.

Default Disk Error

I just tried to install DVD Navigation Map DATA ver 03.3 and received DISK ERROR. I tried many times, checked the DVD for dirt and scratches. No luck. Is there a compatibility problem? I am coming from DATA 2000 v.1. Any ideas are greatly appreciated. If possible, please e-mail me at russ@russgelberg.com . Thank you

Unhappy

I just went looking on eBay again. It appears that Version 3.3 is for Generation 4 units and I believe that on the 01LS we have the Generation 2 unit. So it looks like I learned a $60.00 lesson. I'll try to resell to someone. Here is what it says on eBay:

You are bidding on a Lexus or Toyota Navigation DVD Data version 3.3 . Simply pop out your old version disk and replace it with this newer version 3.3 with new maps and new POI information. This is the disk that comes in 2004 model year vehicles. Will not work in Generation 3 (Sienna) units unles they came with an upgraded Gen 4 unit.

Yes I'm bummed. So what version am I looking for? Anyone need version 3.3?

That stinks Russ... But do u have any idea on what disc is suppose to run... If it is either 3.1 or 3.2... I have bought a 4.1 from the dealer itself, as i was really frustrated... I still want to figure out what happened.

Thanks
