My buudy lives in Sierra Vista , AZ way south by border...has to treat his water with salt and when taking a shower it feels like all the soap doesnt rinse off.
softeners don't actually treat the water directly with salt, there's a large 'resin container' of polystyrene beads that do have sodium in them (part of salt) which is exchanged with the hard calcium carbonate (chalk) in the water. the resin container is automatically 'recharged' every few days from a brine (salt) solution from another container to flush out the removed chalk and soak the beads in the salt solution.

not everywhere has hard water but if you have it, you want a softener. you get used to the 'soft' water that makes more soapy bubbles than regular water.
with hard water and no softener, you get white deposits in faucets and toilets and it will reduce the water pressure throughout.
^^^^AND you don't want to drink it or feed it to plants. I'm in Arizona and have a loop in my garage. I have soft water on all faucets, except the cold in the kitchen and all hose bibs outside.

interesting... i don't the tiny amount of salinity will make much difference. i have a well and drink filtered version of output after softener... seems fine to me. our plant seem to be doing ok too.

The softened water contains approximately 46 parts per million sodium and is well within safe drinking water standards and will not harm plants. You can't tell its there.
