Had the car taken in for a 60k mile service and the dealer wanted $400 for parts and labor for hood strut replacement and was wondering if I can just buy the parts myself and do the work. Has anyone attempted this before? Want to try and work this myself haha.
Me and my BIG mouth My hood is now sagging, in fact yesterday, it dropped and bumped me in the head Ordered new STABILUS struts from Rock Auto this morning
And no - Not $400 bux Struts with shipping was $44 bux.
Mine were a bit shot at 42k miles when I bought my LC. Cheapest place is rock auto. The 2 struts with shipping to US east coast came to $32. Look for Stabilus 4B796375. Installation was very easy, just look at any hood strut replacement video on YouTube and it’ll be the same. just take note of the orientation of the struts. I replaced mine within 5 minutes.
I did see the exact same struts on Amazon and eBay for ~$40. I see that the base price on Rock Auto is $11 each. Regardless, way better than paying $400+ for this.

If the quality of these struts equal or are very close to the OEM Lexus parts that’s a very good deal.
Thanks for the info.
Finally got around to replacing mine, bought the A-Premium ones off Amazon for like 26.
For anyone who needs the visual - you just need a screwdriver to slightly lift or remove the locking clip out of position. I didn't find it necessary to completely remove the clip (and have it shoot off or fall in the engine bay, lol) as the struts came off freely.
Picture was easier to show with the new strut prior to install:
