Also in auto if you turn off the car they will stay on as long as the doors are open but if you shut the doors they will turn off after the timer expires.
I have left them manually on many times and walked away from the car, even without locking the car and they always turn off by themselves. JoeZ is correct. I am not sure about the other scenario JoeZ mentioned.
I ran the battery down once with the lights in Auto. After parking in a garage and turning off the engine I wanted to take a nap. Latter I wanted to turn down the windows a little so I turned on the electricity by double clicking the Start button and put down the windows and then thought I turned off the electricity but I guess the lights came back on when I lowered the windows and didn't go off.
As long as you Turn the car off, then open your door and exit you are fine..
If you have the door open, then turn the car off.. I think they remain ON..

Took some pics with my F and my friend's 2010 TL and I had a chance to test this out, since we wanted some pics with our lights on.
JoeZ is correct, it works like this:
If you turn the lights ON while the car is ON, shut off the car and walk away, the lights will shut off automatically (I think 30 secs)...or if you click the lock button twice on the key fob.
If you turn the lights ON after the car is OFF, the lights will not go off until you manually shut them off.

They do, but this is also the case with the trunk. If in auto mode, if you leave the doors or the trunk open, the lights stay on. My wife, when she goes to the grocery store comes home and opens up her trunk for me to carry in the bags. The lights come on because of the darkness in the garage. I can't get her to close the trunk, so her lights go out, and then let me open it

Though one Lou !
Don't open the Trunk till after she has: turned off, exited the car and the lights have Auto timered Off (30 secs)...
Other wise, with Trunk opened anytime during the timer, they will remain ON.
Till after all doors (including trunk) have been closed. (with car off)
It's not exactly a timer. It's the integration relay. The lights turn off when you open the driver's door as long as the engine is shut off - it does not matter if the switch is in auto or ON, it will always do this. Toyota has been doing this since the 80's.
There is a LPS selection that let's you decide exactly when the lights turn off - immediately after opening the door, or after opening the door and having the timer count down. I had mine set to turn off immediately because leaving the lights on is an annoyance to me. I want to know they're off when I walk away.
After turning off the ignition and all the doors (and trunk) are closed, if the headlights are ON or in the AUTO position, the lights can be programmed for the following:
Turn off immediately, when the vehicle is turned off and the driver door is opened.
