Default Convertible top rubber maintenance

I would like to properly maintain my ISC top and am wondering what products people use to clean and treat all the various rubber seals involved with the retractable top. Also how do you position the top to access all the seals? Just let go of the button partway through the opening process? Any special considerations when performing this maintenance, or do most folks not even bother doing this? I would think it is worth doing as these cars are getting very old.

Thanks for any advice here.

Thanks for the replies here. I was at my local dealer discussing a creaking noise coming from my roof when closed and the mechanic just gave me a tube of this product which they use at the dealership.

I did a little research on ChatGPT and the recommendation was to use both but not on the same areas. Sil glyde as a lubricant in specific spots and the gummy fledge as a protectant everywhere else

“The Correct Order (and Where Each Goes)1️⃣ Clean first (always)
  • Mild soap + water or a rubber-safe cleaner
  • Soft brush or microfiber
  • Dry completely
2️⃣

Sil-Glyde

→ Selective lubrication only

Use Sil-Glyde sparingly on:
  • High-friction contact points
    • Roof panel mating edges
    • Areas where rubber slides against metal or another rubber surface
  • Freeze-prone spots (winter use)
  • Known squeak/rub points
How to apply
  • Very thin film on a foam applicator or gloved finger
  • Wipe until it looks almost dry
  • Do not coat the entire seal
Why
  • Sil-Glyde is a lubricant, not a conditioner
  • Too much = dirt attraction + possible sealing issues
3️⃣

303 or Gummi-Pflege

→ General conditioning

After Sil-Glyde is applied where needed:

Choose ONE:
  • Gummi-Pflege
    • Best for convertible roof seals
    • Slightly more “grab” → excellent sealing and noise reduction
  • 303 Aerospace Protectant
    • Better for UV protection and exposed seals
    • Drier finish
Apply to
  • All remaining rubber seals
  • Door, window, and roof perimeter seals
How
  • Light, even coat
  • Let it absorb
  • Wipe off excess

Where NOT to Combine Them

❌ Don’t layer Sil-Glyde and 303/Gummi on the same exact surface

  • The protectant won’t bond properly
  • Can cause smearing or squeaks
Think of it as:
  • Sil-Glyde = spot treatment
  • 303 / Gummi = full-seal maintenance

I used Gummy Fledge and silicone spray based off the recommendations from the ISC Facebook group. Basically, you would clean all the rubber with an all purpose cleaner and a micro fiber towel. Once cleaned, you then apply gummy fledge to the seals. You also can clean the gears and spray silicone spray on the gears. What I do is try to get the top about half way and then try to clean quick as a can. it stays up for maybe 10-20 seconds, then it will slowly go back down. I haven't figured out how to hold it permanently yet.

Thanks. I ended up doing similar but used sil-glyde at rubber/metal and rubber/rubber contact points and gummi fledge everywhere else after cleaning first with this product https://a.co/d/1THzwwA

I am able to put it in service position and it stays there

How do you put it in “service” position?

This is just my referring to stopping the opening action by letting go of the switch when it reaches a position that exposes what top parts you want to access. In this case the seals for cleaning and lubricant. You can then shut the car off but when you restart the first action should be to fully close the top. This the top’s ’home’ position.
