Unhappy Intermittent Backup Camera Operation

I posted this in the RC side of the forum, but its dead over there.. Im sure its applicable here too, lots of knowledge over here.

Not sure what's causing this, but my backup camera will sometimes work, other times it won't. It's completely random, nothing causes it to work, nothing causes it to not work.

Only thing I've changed related to that system is my head unit, the aftermarket apple car play screen, similar to the Lexion unit, but I installed that years ago and its worked since. One thing I noticed is the screen seems to lose CAN data whenever the camera doesn't work, like it cant detect the doors are open or if there's an AC condition change.

Any ideas?

I had this problem too... The carplay module seems to be the problem. When reverse is engaged, sometimes it just turns into a black screen, sometimes it shows the correct image, but flickers. If putting it back to lexus interface right after you startup the car, by holding down menu button and the screen flickers or just blanks, it is most probably the carplay module has become faulty. Mine was working fine for two years+ and mine isn't the screen, just the carplay module on original screen and I checked that all connections are nice and tight.

My screen isn't an OEM screen, it's actually an aftermarket unit similar to Lexion sold by Iric Tan on Facebook. Even when I'm not using CarPlay, the backup camera still won't work.

This is really aggravating, I have 5% ceramic tint on the car, but being the RC its so hard to see out of backing up at night... Its about to have me convinced to buy the 2018 screen and headunit, and have factory CarPlay...

Maybe it's just the camera itself?
Take a look at the camera lens and see if there is any fogginess or condensation around the center of the camera.
If you see a greyish/whiteish circle around the perimeter of the camera lens, then that likely indicates moisture/condensation inside.
The Toyota/Lexus cameras are pretty good quality, but nothing lasts forever.

The camera doesn’t appear to have any moisture intrusion. And it works sometimes.

^^ That seems like a stretch but worth asking....I recall you mention that you had been involved in an accident at one point. Is is possible that a wire connection may have gotten loose and that it will occasionally not work?

it’s been doing it for months… I actually am in the process of buying a 2018 screen and head unit. Gives me the bigger screen and factory CarPlay. That first reply to this post convinced me it’s the aftermarket screen.

Wow, how much will it cost overall to install 2018 screen and HU? I remember it was a few grand plus labour . I am going to diagnose the root cause of the problem this coming weekend and see what exactly is causing the issue, hopefully I can get to the bottom of this. Meanwhile, I attach a video of the flickering screen of the Lexus Interface, after exiting the carplay/module interface, sometimes it flickers, sometimes it flat-out blanks and reverse wont come on, sometimes it works. Towards last few seconds of the video, the screen stopped flickering and just blanked out.

Had some time to do some troubleshooting and finally solved the flickering issue completely. There was nothing wrong with the roadtop carplay module, it was the cables connecting the screen, namely the LVDS cable and the screen power cable. I swapped out both cables with new ones and that solved the issue, could have been only either cable, but I swapped both out since already got behind the screen. The main harness cable connected to the head unit is still working fine and wasn't the problem. Hope that helps anyone facing similar problem.

Where did you buy a new LVDS cable? Lexus doesn't sell them by themselves. Only as part of the full dash harness.

I got those cables from roadtop, if you have Lexion or other brands, you can just buy from them.

If you bought from roadtop from aliexpress, shoot them a message and tell them what you need, that's what I did.
