Default Android and Apple Carplay - Is it possible?

Hello everyone,

I have a 2014 Lexus IS350 F-Sport and was wondering if it's possible to get Apple Carplay installed? I was wanting to replace the factory screen with something a bit bigger along with it having Apple Carplay. Has anyone does this before? Is it even worth it?

Appreciate any responses and help! Thank you!

Yeah it is but it seems like all the solutions are pretty ghetto IMO. They all have their own quirks, (not starting up Apple Carplay automatically, you have to go into menus to open it, the mouse / touchpad not working properly, it's too far to use as a touch screen, issues with screen not functioning).

I want something seamless, get in my car, ready to go. Not trying to do the most each time I sit in the car. Even worst, you have a passenger and something goes wrong, looks almost embarrassing honestly. Costs like $600+ and that's without installation (which I would pay for). Next car I get will be a vehicle with Apple Carplay already installed

I just bought a 3M magnetic mount and angled my phone towards me.. Way less intrusive and perfectly visible.

Yeah, from what I have been looking at it's either a hit or miss with a lot of these head units. I saw this one by Lexion Automotive that people were saying was good. Again, it's almost $1000. For something that price, I'd for sure want it working seamlessly. I'd hate to drop that much for it to lag or have features not work.

I bought one from Taobao (Chinese version of eBay), and installed it myself, it worked great so far. only cost me about $280 including shipping to the US.

Does the joystick work? I had the exact unit but joystick never worked tried all the trouble shooting from seller even sold me a piece of junk cable said it will work never did. I ended up getting Android screen. At least yours look oem because of the factory big screen.

The one with the most reviews is probably the one by 4x4 Canada. I really want Carplay with that 10 inch screen too but reliability and sound quality is why I haven't done it yet.

the joystick is a little bit funky. It works perfectly if you don't push too hard, just one soft click to the direction you want. the only issue I have so far is the sound quality, it's ok if the car is idling, but pretty noisy while driving. You would hear a noticeable white noise. I didn't use the Carplay audio but the OEM Bluetooth audio while sacrificing the audio guidance of Google map.

I've seen someone on IG with a '14/'15 IS mention swapping in the Android and Apple capable screen from a newer RC. Has anyone here successfully done this screen swap? Is it really possible or was that person blowing smoke?

Sidenote: the few people I've messaged on IG aren't helpful and don't answer any questions. Lots of crappy/fake enthusiast just looking to get likes and followers. It sucks.

yes its possible but very very labor intensive. The RC's Navigation stereo equipped with Carplay is different generation Lexus Navigation, the wire plugs are completed different and will either have to build adapter harness or swap entire interior dashboard harness with modification to integrate the two (IS & RC)

I've been going back and fourth on this and always settle on the screen mirroring. Every time I want to pull the trigger on an Android Auto or Carplay box, I find some other issue that's typically small but discouraging.

With the screen mirroring setup, its always stable since it lives in the native system and as fast as the phone. I use an Android with an app that automatically adjusts the resolution and rotates the screen once connected. After using wireless, I opted for a wired setup since wireless drains a lot of battery. I ran a hidden cable to the center console to screen cast and charge at the same time. I can use voice controls for most actions but I also have a bluetooth mouse for anything else that's needed such as zooming in on maps etc.. Only downside is that its lower resolution than the AA/carplay boxes but its not a big deterrent to me.

Extremely expensive to do to the point where it's not worth it. I think there's someone named 3ISFSport who ended up selling his OEM stuff (which he spent THOUSANDS on) to upgrade to something different... and then he wanted to raffle it away.. hope that speaks for itself

What screen did you end up going with? I know Lexion has one for like $850 and Iric Tan (YZG) has one for like $650.

Do you happen to have a link that you could send me? I'm interested in checking it out!

I bought a used one from here for $400 but it was the original unit that 4x4shop was selling. It’s a bit slow and sometime I have audio skip issue. If I had to do it all over I would get Lexion unit.

That's what seems to be the overall consensus on here. Lexion appears to be the best out of all the units so far.
