Question on Nav UPDATE @ Dealership
Hi, spent a long day at the dealership - they did a bunch of additional stuff not listed on a IS350 FSport RWD so comment on anything, but the main point of this post is below regarding getting a NAV Update done at the dealership:
- Heat Pump Safety Recall - free of charge but takes around 3 friggin hours so u might wanna ask for a complimentary loaner.
- Differential repair where transaxle meets drive shaft(??).
- Induction repair - carbon build up on motor.
- New Windshield Wipers & install - $40.
- They recommended rotating Front Tires (driver/passenger side) to level out inner tire wear - not sure how accurate this is but i went along with it.
- Two new rear tires installed - got Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3+ on sale for $300 coz they’re discontinued.
- Cozza new rear tires they recommended a 4-wheel alignment. Not sure if this is a rip off coz this was done barely 2k miles ago so I passed, but TBH $150 ain’t too shabby for a 4-wheel alignment.
- Here’s the kicker…
- NAV Update costs a whopping $250!! And, it applies only up to 2019 which sux even further. Service Advisor said this is the last one Lexus offers coz everything is now Apple CarPlay & Android Auto. I’d have passed but my hood has lotsa new streets so told them to go ahead. About an hour later dude comes back and says they can’t do it coz they “don’t have the parts / USB / Lexus scanner, etc, etc”. Dunno why this is so complicated, but anyway, they said to come back later and get it done. Just wondering if anyone got this done at a Lexus Dealer, other than GPS are there any other benefits/efficiencies, & how much $$ did you pay?? Thx!!

Just my 2 cents:
- Differential repair where axle meets drive shaft. - Not sure what this means as the axle and driveshafts are the same thing
- They recommended rotating Front Tires (driver/passenger side) to level out inner tire wear - not sure how accurate this is but i went along with it. - Did they mean rotate the entire wheel side to side? Cause that will do nothing...if they meant to take the tires off the rims and swap the tires side to side, then that I can see accomplishing this.

Service Advisor said this is the last one Lexus offers coz everything is now Apple CarPlay & Android Auto. - I guess we need to clarify what is meant by Nav update...there is updates for the radio head unit (firmware) and then the Map updates. The firmware covers the functioning of the unit whereas the Map update is just that, an update to the Map data. The Map update is just the microSD card that gets replaced...you literally remove the old card (with the vehicle off), insert the new card, and start the car. Where I am the card is $226 CAD (including tax)...so $250 and $325 USD seems a little on the high side.

Induction repair- carbon build up on motor. What was this? Cleaning the Carbon build up inside the Head intake ports and the Valves?
Do you know how they did this? Did they hook up a hose with a Chemical and run through the Head, a Vacuum connection? Do you know what the cost was?

there’s also a campaign to update the gps firmware, that should be free but I hear it’s only needed if you use enform, which you shouldn’t because it sucks. The map SD card is a rip off, use your smartphone or get an aftermarket screen unit with CarPlay or Android auto. Also you’re dropping tons of cash doing all that additional work at a dealership😳 maybe I’m just cheap.
the way I used to get the latest firmware updates was to say the unit was glitching, they would update it and give me a free car wash. There’s website that has a firmware checker but I’m positive it doesn’t work. Never bothered with the map updates, the stock gps sucks, not droppings hundreds on something obsolete. I recommend Lexion screen upgrade, wireless CarPlay and wide touchscreen for $749

Don't think they swapped the rims. I'm on the same wavelenghth as what you wrote, coz the tires just ride in the opposite direction, but doesn't cross rotate (side to side) provide SOME / minimal benefits?
That's pretty damn cheap esp considering CDN $ - isn't there any labor charges - did you get this done? I have to confirm if they also do the radio head unit (firmware) - any benefits to this? If not, I might just pass, but they already ordered things so not sure if I'm on the hook for this. I can however confirm it'll be around $250, and Westminster Lexus emailed saying it's $325.

The microSD card takes just seconds to replace, so they shouldn't be a labor charge.
Typically I use the car Navi unless it doesn't have the address I'm going to, and then I will use my phone.
Upgrading the Map data yearly is not financially feasible...but if you were to do it once after 5-6 years, then I don't see why not.
It seems from your original post that you wanted the Map update, but the advisor was planning to do a firmware update...which won't do anything for the Map data.

Agreed about getting rip-off on map update. You could have bought CarPlay aftermarket retrofit unit for same price and no map update required on Waze even includes live police trap.
Maybe we should clarify pricing:
A few things to keep in mind...for the examples other than the LExus Map Update microSD card, these are one time costs that allow for a variety of additional features to be added to your vehicle outside of just a "navigation update".
The 4x4 and Lexion units add CarPlay and Android Auto which bring along a host of features.
The Beatsonic unit basically adds screen mirroring...if you can do it on the phone, you can do it on the OEM display...which at half the price of some of the Lexion unit might be enough for some people.
The Lexus Map Update microSD card is just that, a Map update. It costs significantly less than all the other examples if the goal is just to have updated map data.
However, since Lexus releases a new map update every Fall, this is not a one time cost if you want to keep your map data always up to date.
4 years of Lexus Map updates = 4x4 or Beatsonic units (with DIY install)
5 years of Lexus Map updates = Lexion unit (with DIY install)
I'm not advocating for any of the options, or any other options out there...it comes down to you, meaning your needs and your budget.
One persons "rip-off" may be another persons perfect price.
Me personally, I use the OEM Navi when I need Navi, and if it's missing a street I need to go to for the first time (which happened 3 days ago), I use my Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Google Maps in a CD phone mount. I play music via Bluetooth and don't watch videos in my car.
So for me I don't need any of the options above...but that's me.
- Lexus Map Update microSD card from dealer - $226 CAD ($178 USD) (including tax - no labor install, you can DIY in 10 seconds or less)
- 4x4 Shop 10.25 Display - $839 CAD ($660 USD) (including tax, installation extra unless you DIY)
- Lexion Display - $1,082 CAD ($849 USD) (shipping may be free, installation extra unless you DIY)
- BeatSonic phone mirroring kit - approx. $567 CAD ($445 USD) (exact price depends if you have Apple or Android - shipping extra, installation extra unless you DIY)

EDIT: in this thread several posts say there's labor charges but dunno WHY Lexus CHARGES FOR THIS - https://www.clublexus.com/forums/gs-4th-gen-2013-present/846010-navigation-update-worth-it.html.
EDIT-2: the manual says to "NOT eject the SD card" or risk deactivating the system... lol Guess this is OK with the car off, and then insert the new one.

With the vehicle off the microSD card can be safely swapped. Once you start the car it will load perfectly fine.
Like the manual shows, just flip the door down, press the microSD card and it will pop out. Push the new one in (I believe it clicks when inserted all the way) and close the door.
I'm not sure where you can find it online...but the thing to watch out for is that the card can only be used once.
Once it's been inserted into the vehicle and loaded (when the vehicle starts up), it will only work with that vehicle...more specifically it will only work with that radio head unit.
So if someone is selling it used, it's likely a scam.
