here is how to reboot the navigation/display screen:
1. Remove the battery terminals for positive and negative
2. Leave the battery unplugged for 30 minutes to an hour (may actually require less time but this is how long we waited)
3. Press the start button once to turn on the accessory/battery mode (do not have your foot on the brake and start the car). *if you start the car the screen will still remain black and you will have to start over
4. Press the pwr/vol button to turn on the radio
5. The display screen will light up and show a progress bar showing it is loading the information from the sim card. Once this completes the system will reboot and the display will light up as normal.

hope this helps!

Reviving this thread.

Ive lived with this issue for a year. Been avoiding dropping the cash on a new headunit for my 2014 is350 f sport. My plan has been to get a used headunit from a 2017 RCF for about $900.

before I do so I want to see if anyone has found any new information on a solution. To note, power cycle method never worked. But as cold mornings occur on occasion everything will boot up for a minute or two before crashing again.

I am new here lol. Not even sure if I’m writing in the same area. I am hoping this works for me. I have a 2016 Lexus is 300. I tried the ss card trick and it worked for one car ride and went back to it. Same issues as others on this thread. My screen is restarting all the time however my backup camera works just fine. The screen could be off and radio not working but I put it in reverse and the backup screen pops up. All of the a/c controls work but I did notice three times my defrost was the only option that worked after starting it and randomly then the heat would work again. You could hear the air running but it wasn’t coming out. Another thing is the usb ports stopped working like 3 years ago. I gave up on that a long time ago. If my phone dies and idk where I’m at I have to pray my screen turns on long enough to follow the red dots to somewhere I recognize if they’re even there. I work 1 1/2 away from home so all of this is just so fun to deal with. I am so happy I saw this thread because you may have saved me a lot of time and frustration. It sucks for all of us but I’m glad I’m not alone. My mom has a newer model and she thought I did something to mine lol. Now I can show her this. I will call my local dealer when they’re open and tell them about this defect. My mom used to work there so I’m hoping she can call someone that can do something. I know one thing, I refuse to pay that much for a new radio when it’s a manufacturer defect. I hope you all have great holidays! I will post an update when I try this.

This worked but it failed again after shutting car off and restarting. For clarity, it is the Nav portion not working. The side screen with climate, audio, etc is on.

Other oddities: screen says "audio off" even though audio is on. Can't get radio information to appear on HUD.

Same situation for me.

I had the same issue starting a couple of weeks ago on my 2016 IS350, with the Mark Levinson system. Happened after a battery change and the blank screen, backup camera worked, system intermittently came on and then finally went out. Found Original Car Audio in Burnsville, MN - www.cd4car.com 952.707.6200.. Spoke to a rep there and explained my issue, they advised sounded like the 'known' issue and would have to run a test. Ended up actually traveling there last week for work and brought the head unit with me. Worked with Jon, who was amazing and very familiar with the Lexus units. They fixed the unit and I installed it back in the car this past weekend. It works perfectly, I would definitely recommend talking to them about your unit.

What was explained to me (high level) is that when a battery change or jump, could cause the issue as the original stereo didn't have a circuit protector on the board, which starts there, impacts the chip, graphics card, ram etc. They also put a circuit protector on the rebuild to hopefully prevent that issue in the future.

Hope this helps...

This listing on ebay is where I first started:

Not sure if I had mentioned it already but I sent my radio from my 2014 Non-ML Navi model to OEM Car Audio in MN. I had the black screen, constant reboot, etc. The first time I sent it, I had some issues when I got it back, and they advised me to send it again as they found a new method to get it working permanently. Its been about a year and a few months ever since and it has worked flawlessly through the harsh winter cold and hot summer months up here in Canada. They give you 1 year warranty on it. So if its acting up again within the year, you can send it right back. My radio code was P10435.

It costed me roughly $1,000 CAD all in. The guys there are great and turn around time was like 2 weeks. If you do call ask for Jon, he helped me through the process.

Edit: I didnt even read the post above as I typed this, but there you go lol. 2 of us here can vouch.

Did you ever end up filing a case? I filed a claim with Lexus headquarters and would like to get some references for other people this has happened to. A dealership in dallas quoted me $10,600.

I know this is a few years old now but I am interested in helping you with this! It just recently happened to me after a battery change. Lexus dealership quoted me an obscene amount of money to fix. This is BS!

If you do, please respond to this post. If you do not I would be grateful if you could confirm whether you are willing for me to take a witness statement from you, to support mine and possible others claims.

I had the battery changed after it had died, turned the car back on and the screen was blank. I had the fuses checked and they are fine. I took the car to Lexus, Edgware Road, London. I informed them that all the fuses had been checked and were fine, they stated that there was no reset and I would need to book my car in for diagnostics at a cost of £196.00. I was initially told that this would cover up to 2 hours work on the car. I received a call later that day to say they had checked the fuses (about 20 minutes work) and they needed to carry out further diagnostics, which would cost me in excess of £500.00. They stated that they needed to check if a wire had disconnected, which would involve the removal of more panels. I was told if it is not a wire and the Sat Nav has broken, it will cost me in the region of an additional £2,000.00 to replace. (£2,696 together) I refused this stating that I only had the battery changed. I informed them that having looked at this and other threads it is clear that it is a recurring problem with 3rd Gen (an inherent fault/defect) and in fact other Lexus models. Lexus stated that they have known of this being a problem with earlier models, but not the IS250 3rd Gen. I requested my complaint was escalated. The response from Lexus GB was that I would have to pay for the further diagnostics (£500 +) and if the Sat Nav needs replacing they MAY, be able to offer me some kind of discount. I have not accepted this, I sent a letter to the legal department and they have come back saying it is not their fault, there is no evidence of manufacture defect . . .go away. I am not happy about this and think action should be taken against them. I understand that cars have faults and that we as owners have to pay for the faults if not under warranty, however those faults should not be manufacture faults.

Default The radio defect

After talking to my closest Lexus dealership they were going to charge me basically $300 for a diagnostics appointment and if I chose to do the repairs the $300 would go towards that. Which is a complete setup and I’m glad I did my research before going to the appointment. I would've paid the $300 to find out it costs thousands for a freakin head unit. And I would’ve said **** no and been out $300.
I found my oem radio that Lexus is selling through dealerships and ofc it’s a stupid mark Levinson package. My radios faceplate id is p11010. Over $7k when not on sale. It’s on sale for a whopping $6,500 right now which is honestly laughable. I will never purchase another Lexus again. Haven’t had a radio in well over a year so I have to carry an extra large jbl speaker around if I want music. I drive over an hour to work one way so you could imagine how fun that is.
I don’t like mark Levinson. If I could cuss I would. He made Lexus agree to a contract which entails they are not to fix these defective units. Another set up, so then he can sell more of them. And who knows if that one will defect too. You might also get the servo motor defect. Definitely look into that and take precautions to avoid it. I got both of them in my 2016 Lexus is300.

Reddit is a good place to post. Post in the main Lexus group on Reddit and you’ll get a good handful of replies. I might even reply over there too because it would be awesome if we could group together and make something happen. Like I legit can’t stand Lexus over this. And it’s affected too many people and shows complete lack of respect and consideration to their customer base. I hope Lexus has the year they deserve.
Look up your radio faceplate id on google. It should pull up the direct link of radio price listing on Lexus’s oem part website. You find it at the bottom left corner of your radio head unit which is right above the heated seat button if those are by your shift **** like mine. Should be something like p11010, p11012 etc.
Over $10k sounds like they are probably pulling one over on you. Or charging you labor like a mf. It is not hard at all to take out the radio. It’s plug and play to replace and there’s multiple YouTube videos showing how to do it all. You just have to buy a working head unit replacement that matches exactly to yours. But be mindful that it could happen again.
I’m a 24 year old girl with no experience in doing that kind of stuff. With one YouTube video I was able to do what they’re probably charging you $3k to do.

please keep me updated and I’ll be looking for a Reddit post😉 wishing you luck!!

swtjen101 nailed it. I HAD the same issue as described across most help sites on the internet. Your procedure did the trick to bring back the blacked-out radio/nav screen.

4. Press the PWR/VOL button to turn on the Radio
5. The display screen will light up and show a progress bar showing it is loading the information from the SIM card. Once this completes the system will reboot and the display will light up as normal.

THANK YOU SO MUCH! I saved an expenisve (probably) dealer visit.

I drove my car for the first time after recharging the battery when it died. I had just pressed the brake and hit start, threw it in reverse to back out of the garage and was horrified that there was no rear camera and the screen was completely blank. I put it in drive and then reverse again hoping that would retrigger it. No luck. I did my errands, each time hoping it would come back on after restart to no avail.

That is when I did an internet search and found this thread and your answer as well as a YouTube video that had a similar suggestion, basically confirming your fix. So, I had my brother unhook the battery. He said just unhooking the negative should be good enough and said he'd unhook the positive if it didn't.

After waiting an hour, he reconnected the negative (positive was on this whole time), I got in the car and remembered NOT to press the brake like you suggested (just pressing the start button once to get into ACCESSORY mode).

As soon as I did that, the screen lit up normally. I then pressed the brake and started the car to see if the reverse camera came on and YIPPEE! It came right on like it was supposed to.

Sorry for the lengthy reply. I just wanted to post my adjustments to the original fix in case anyone wanted to try that. I did not have to press the radio button at all. The screen and camera just started working after the negative battery terminal was disconnected and I first went into accessory mode (one press) before starting the engine.

Thank you again. I would have gone to the dealership to 'fix' the camera and screen. You saved me a lot of time and trouble (and money).

I guess after charging or replacing a dead battery, we have to not just start the engine, but put it in accessory mode first to normalize the settings. This should be in user manuals (or maybe it is and I didn't see it).

I have a 2018 IS300 AWD, base if anyone is wondering which model it was.
