Default Wire dashcam to ignition power in mirror?

I have done some searches and think I've found the relevant threads, but I want to get confirmation from people who have actually done it.

From what I've gathered, I should be able to leverage the incoming ignition power that goes to the rear view mirror, which is supposedly the blue wire. From there I can cut the power cable in my dashcam and splice it into the blue wire connection to power the dash cam?

I've heard some people also wire it through the headliner/A-piller and to the relays, but I'd rather take the shortest route.

i've wired my V1 radar detector from the power in the mirror. there's a thread on here (cant find it at the moment) that shows which wire is live and which is the ground. it's a 12v so it should work with your camera

Did you use the mirrortap product?

You should not connect 12V directly to your dash cam. Very likely it uses USB cable to power up which has lower voltage input. You need to step down from 12V to 5V with regulator. Someone here did this..

I wired my Passport Max with a mirrortap. Works perfect.

Good call, thanks. I didn't realize that most the dashcams were 5V, and the one I want to get is in fact 5V

Yes, most people don't mention this because they use mirror tap for radar detectors which use 12V but dashcam are different.

If I were to wire this across the A-pillar down to the relays, is there +5V there? I don't have a repair manual for my IS and it's still new to me so I don't know my way around the vehicle yet.

Speaking of which are there readily available repair manuals and such for our cars? Where do people find out information for DIY?

Thanks again for your help

I don't believe there's any 5V in the car. The best way is to wire to fuse box by the driver's side with voltage converter, or do as I did but a bit more complicated. I wired to center console cig lighter which your dashcam can directly plug without converting voltage. It's complicated since you do need to take out some trims near shifter plate.
