so i was reading a post on another forum and someone mentioned something about the gear indicator showing say gear 4 in manual mode but the transmission may be in a different lower gear. and thin i realized something about my old 2007 IS 350 rwd i recall the transmission worked that way. it will not hold a gear you select. rather it just allows the transmission to shift normally up to the highest gear you select.
is this true about the new IS? or can you select a gear like a manual transmission and it will hold the gear you select, not shifting up or down until you tell it to or until you come to a stop.
does the 6 speed and 8 speed behave the same way or are there differences?
A Lexus salesman told me recently that the 6 speed will hold the gear if activated from the shift lever, but not if regulated by the paddles. Was I given misinformation?

The six speed will hold whatever gear you select in Manual Mode whether selected from the paddles or the shift lever. And as dojoman mentioned, it will downshift as you slow down so the engine doesn't bog down.
