Default TPMS compatibility

I have a set of wheels off a 2014 is350 with TPMS sensors, which I would like to install on my 2007 is250. I am wondering on the compatibility of the TPMS sensors.
can 3IS TPMS sensors be programmed to work on a 2IS, or would I have to source 2IS compatible sensors?

I am aware there is a part number difference between the two generations but am curious if the 3IS sensors are backwards compatible. thanks in advance folks.

Yup. Originally they were not reading and had thrown a "check pressure" and low tire pressure light. Once I drove around on them, they woke up (like the tire tech told me they would...I kind of think it was BS) however the lights are now gone. I put them on yesterday afternoon

so I went to two America's tires this weekend and both of them failed to program my 2014 sensors to my 2007.

do I need to have the car set to "2nd" to program the second set of sensors?

what was happening is that every time they plugged in their scanner/programmer the car would idle all funky, all cluster lights started to flicker like vegas, and the reader would say "plug OBD into car..." when it was. they concluded (not really certain) that it's due to the newer sensors. in my mind, the car does not even recognize the programmer in the first place so I'm leading to believe that my car is possibly locked to external programming other than the dealership. is this possible haha?

Works perfectly fine, both read 315MHZ sensors. Just reset it properly in your setting manual and drive about ten miles.

Feel free to PM me with all your questions.

i just wanted to follow up on this thread.
the same location America's tire was previously unable to program the sensors back last January was now able to this past weekend.
I believe they were not using the correct wire on their programmer initially. there is a special 'asian' cable specifically for non-domestic cars.

now I have 3is sensors programmed successfully on my 2is, no problems!
FINALLY no more TPMS light (after over a year, mainly my fault for not addressing this more aggressively).

Semi related question, can all wheels accommodate TPMS sensors? Aftermarket and the like?

no, not all wheels are TPMS compatible. some wheel designs utilize 90deg valve stems such as 3 piece wheels.
they do make adapters that utilize the 90deg valve stem to mount the TPMS sensor, like below:
https://www.clublexus.com/forums/gs-...placement.html

it does make it hard to mount the tire, so you have to make sure the installer is careful.

another update to my original post!

3is sensors were successfully programmed...for only a few days then the "check system" light comes back on!
I took it back to America's tire and they were able to reinitialize the sensors to the car and the light turns off...but comes back in 2-3 days of driving.

anyone know if it's their programmer this time?
If someone has techstream that is willing to help, I will make it worth their trouble !

After they program them, is the car actually reading the pressures and temperatures. Other than people in this thread, my experience has been 3IS sensors will not work correctly with a 2IS. They are a newer type of sensor that relays position information as well as the pressure and temperature. I don't believe your car will correctly read the data they are transmitting (same frequency or not).

I would love to be proven incorrect.

thanks jeff for the response.
the 2is is not equipped to read the pressures, temps, and location like the 3is does (which then displays them in the cluster).
my mindset was that despite all these new features, the 3is sensors should still relay the basic signal if the pressure drops below threshold.

funny enough when America's tire removed the old sensors from the car, they are required to return them to you.
when they returned mine, there was what looks to be one 3is sensor (VDO) and the rest of the three remaining were 2is...further showing more proof 3is sensor can be used?

in my searches I found this...could it be my problem as well?

^^^^I have VDO sensors in my ISF. They are not 3IS sensors. Why do think VDO sensors are 3IS sensors?

i had a 3IS and put aftermarket wheels on it using a second set of sensors, which came in VDO boxes just like below.
i suppose they are universal in the end, and i don't know what model the 2IS sensors are. all i know is that they look different that below.

Old thread but can someone confirm: if I have two sets of wheels (summer/winter) each with their own set of TPMS, I only have to get them programmed once?
So once they're initialized I won't have to reprogram every 6 months since I'm not removing any tires? 2008 is250 thanks
