2008 Lexus IS 350 Shock Replacement
So I took my car into the dealer recently and he quoted me $2100 for two new rear tires, shocks (they're leaking oil, allegedly), and wheel alignment. Let's just say I'm not approving this quote anytime soon.
What brand shocks do you recommend and do all 4 need to be replaced if only the rear shocks are bad? I'm probably going to order the parts and replace them myself. My Lexus has about 84,000 miles on it and they're saying if you don't replace the shocks, the tires will wear down a lot faster. Also, I need to get my car inspected this month and the tires won't pass inspection (replacing them soon but the shocks are a problem)...any help would be greatly appreciated!

at $2,100 you could replace all of your shocks, replace all of your tires, get a wheel alignment and still have a bunch left over. Quite a few people use the KYB Gas-A-Just shock. They are usually somewhere around $90 per shock.

Thanks for the quick response..I had a feeling I was paying top dollar at park place lol. That looks like a decent shock, I noticed it's monotube, is that standard for this model car? I'm somewhat unfamiliar with all the intricacies of this suspension setup

yes, it just a monotube and coil spring. as stated for that price you can get some coilovers tires and alignment lol. But there are DIYs on the forum. With 2 people the shocks can be done in a few hours

Hey whats up! Shocks leaking oil should be normal, How does your suspension feel? Are they blown? The dealer told me about my shocks leaking in the past as well but to me as long as the shock is not blown it should be okay. As for tires you can use our vendors here or Tire rack, they ship to your door relatively quickly.
Another alternative for shocks would be Koni FSD. Apparently theres a handful of people who got them and say the ride quality is smoother than stock.
If not KYB has always been a great choice as multiple members have use that for replacement.
You could always go for coils too

My mechanic told me the same thing, my rear shocks leaking and bad for the tires. I'm not too worried about it since IS's destroy tires anyway.....He quoted $600.00 to replace rears using KYB.

My front left shock squeaks over bumps. Lexus told me it is leaking last week during my oil change. I have 137k miles on her in the 66 months I have owned her since new.

I took my car in the other day to get an oil change and had them do the cabin air filter. Turns out they screwed that up and now it makes a clicking noise when I turn the air on the setting where it pulls outdoor air inside. Hopefully they didn't break that motor in there...
